About this Item: Meynial, Paris, 1924. Barbier, George (illustrator). Small quarto. 12pp., + (12)ff. of colored plates. One of 600 copies. Art Deco legend George Barbier contributed fashion plates to several albums and almanacs starting in 1912 before finally starting his own publication in 1922 titled Falbalas et Fanfreluches. Each annual issue included an almanac for the year, a guest essay, and twelve brightly hand-colored pochoir plates. Not all of the plates depict expected fashion models; Barbier chose to include many fantastical renderings of period and foreign costumes and folk dress, presented in his usual elegant style. Falbalas et Fanfreluches was issued from 1922 through 1926, making this the third of five total issues. This 1924 edition includes "Glorifions la Coquetterie" by Cécil Soral, as well as a color-illustrated title page and an additional black & white headpiece. Near fine, loose as issued in illustrated chemise, showing a modern woman standing in a shell à la Botticelli's Birth of Venus, and original glassine. (Colas 1026). Seller Inventory # 27430

About this Item: Jules Meynial, Paris, 1926. Five annual issues, each in original folding pochoir decorated wrappers (each issue comprising twelve letterpress pages with a separate decorated title-page and twelve pochoir plates measuring 246 x 155 mm.). One of the most elusive and desirable Art-Deco rarities, published by a celebrated Parisian designer. After working upon the design and illustration of other celebrated works, Falbalas and Franfreluches (Frippery and Finery, fashion diaries: past present and future) was George Barbier's own publication project wherein he retained creative control over the entire design and print production process. The result is a magnificent testament to pochoir printing, and Art-Deco design, at its very finest. Barbier spared no effort in printing this eternally endearing dilettante foible, using the finest pigments and up to thirty stencils per print to create deep, sensuous and lustrous images befitting the piquant romantic themes of the series. The plates reflect romance amidst exotic lands and ages past, including a native American idyll on the Missouri, a languid mistress cocooned in a hammock in the tropical Antilles, high baroque debauchery and of course a myriad of depictions of lovers in fashionable Paris of high nineteen-twenties.Each annual includes twelve pages of delicious romantic prose by Barbier's associates in the fashionable Parisian scene, including the novelist Colette and the comic actress Cecile Sorel. Falbalas and Franfreluches represents a literary and artistic printmaking collaboration of unusual finesse, elegance and sophistication. This is a complete set of five annual issues with a total of 60 stunning pochoir plates (in addition to the decorated title-pages specially prepared for each year). All five sections remain fine and fresh, preserved in a felt-lined black cloth folding case. Seller Inventory # 4011239
