About this Item: A.R. Knox, Printed by Jas. T. Norton, Mt. Morris, Dansville, 1845. Stated first edition but in fact, apparently the sole edition. It was printed in the small town of Dansville in western New York in the year the town was incorporated, having been founded in 1795. Babcock is self-identified on the title-page as a "Rev." He was probably either a Baptist or a Methodist minister. The hymns are without the music, as is the norm with such small format hymnals. A scarce very provincial production. 48mo (4" tall). 128 pp. Publisher's black roan; abraded. Top of title-page torn away costing the letters "ed Melo" and portions of "d" and "s" of "Melodies." Light stains in some margins; some edges a little abraded. Seller Inventory # 34398

About this Item: James Nisbet And Co, UK, 1868. Hardcover (Original Cloth). Condition: Good. No Jacket. First Edition. A Selection Of Psalms And Hymns And Spiritual Songs With Appropriate Music For Social And Private Use. With an Index of First Lines & Index to the Music. The following collection will be found to contain, besides the acknowledged masterpieces of our sacred poets, nearly all those hymns which, although of unequal merit, have enshrined themselves in popular sympathy and affection; and if others are less familiar, it is believed that they have only to be known, in order to become equally endeared. As far as possible the hymns are given as they were written by their authors. Only such verbal alterations have been admitted as seemed needful to conform them to the severer taste of the present century. When the length of the originals prevented their insertion as a whole, stanzas have been omitted; but the utmost pains have been taken not to mar their symmetry or completeness. In addition to many long-established favourite Psalm and Hymn Tunes, most of which have been anew harmonized, the book contains many of the finest German Chorales, as well as recent Melodies, which, by their intrinsic merit, have secured a rapid and wide-spread popularity, and for the command of which grateful acknowledgments are due. Apart, however, from these it will be found that a distinctive feature of the work is the large number of original com- positions and new adaptations which it contains. For such acquisitions it is indebted to some of the most distinguished of our modern musicians, and not a few of their productions, it is confidently anticipated, will at once take rank among the most precious contributions which the science of music has recently made to " the service of song" in the domestic circle, and in the house of the Lord.' Book - in Good brown boards with black lettering - some marking to the boards, ends of spine has been professionally repaired with similar cloth, spine laid on with some variation of colour to spine edges and ends, light bumping and wearing to the extreme corners. Contents, new pastedowns and front and rear free endpaper, some marking to the edges of the next free front endpaper which also has the previous owner's inscription and similar marking to the edges of some pages otherwise clean and tightly bound. A Scarce Title. Size: 8.75 inches tall by 6 inches. 2, 10,6, 234 pages. Quantity Available: 1. Shipped Weight: 201-750 grams. Category: Religion & Theology; Music.
