About this Item: Purdue University Press, United States, 2016. Paperback. Condition: New. Language: English. Brand new Book. Dictionary definitions of the term mishpachah are seemingly straightforward: "A Jewish family or social unit including close and distant relatives-sometimes also close friends." As accurate as such definitions are, they fail to capture the diversity and vitality of real, flesh-and-blood Jewish families.Families have been part of Jewish life for as long as there have been Jews. It is useful to recall that the family is the basic narrative building block of the stories in the biblical book of Genesis, which can be interpreted in the light of ancient literary traditions, archaeological discoveries, and rabbinic exegesis. Rabbinic literature also is filled with discussions about interactions, rancorous as well as amicable, between parents and among siblings. Sometimes harmony characterizes relations between the parent and the child; as often, alas, there is conflict. The rabbis, always aware of the realities of life, chide and advise as best they can. For the modern period, the changing roles of males and females in society at large have contributed to differing expectations as to their roles within the family. The relative increase in the number of adopted children, from both Jewish and non-Jewish backgrounds, and more recently, the shifting reality of assisted reproductive technologies and the possibility of cloning human embryos, all raise significant moral and theological questions that require serious consideration.Through the studies brought together in this volume, more than a dozen scholars look at the Jewish family in wide variety of social, historical, religious, and geographical contexts. In the process, they explore both diverse and common features in the past and present, and they chart possible courses for Jewish families in the future. Seller Inventory # AAN9781557537577

About this Item: Jefferson, North Carolina ; London : McFarland & Company, Inc., Publishers, 1998., 1998. Hardcover. Condition: Very Good. viii, 230 pp. ; ISBN: 0786404183 ; LCCN: 97-41692 ; OCLC: 37705342 ; illustrations ; red cloth with white lettering ; searching out, compiling and analyzing Chinese American names throughout the United States, the author can dynamically present the metamorphosis of Chinese names into Chinese American names in the American environment, not only useful to Chinese Americans researching their genealogy, but also for scholars studying the effects of cultural interaction and interchange ; illustrated with photographs, reproductions of applications, certificates of residence, certificates of identity, tombstones, building markers and signage, merchant partnership contracts and the like, as well as a listing of the common surnames ; "The naming practices of Chinese Americans are the focus of this work. Since Chinese immigration began in the mid-19th century, names of immigrants and those of their descendants have been influenced by both Chinese and American name customs. The naming traditions of China are first presented. It is a base for understanding the numerous modifications that may happen to personal names in the interaction between cultures as diametrically opposed as Chinese culture can be from American culture, "itself part of another great tradition, Western civilization." One discovers that surnames are clues to Chinese dialect sounds, that many have been Americanized, that new surnames were created and that, in more recent decades as the Chinese American population has grown, new names practices developed and surnames have proliferated. Included are ideographs to surnames and an overview of their preservation by Americans of Chinese descent." ; a seminal study ; VG. Book. Seller Inventory # 3086
