The Roald Dahl Assortment: a Triple-Signed, Five-Volume: Dahl, Roald

About this Item: Puffin, 1975. Soft cover. Condition: Fine. A delightful and scarce Dahl item, comprising five paperback reprints Charlie & the Chocolate Factory, Charlie & the Great Glass Elevator, James & the Giant Peach, The Magic Finger, and Fantastic Mr Fox issued together in a pictorial slipcase by Puffin in 1975. THREE volumes have been signed by Roald Dahl: Fantastic Mr Fox and The Magic Finger have been signed without dedication to the first page; James & the Giant Peach has been signed and dedicated to the title page. All five books were printed in either 1974 or 1975 and are Fine: bright, crisp, clean and free of creases, presenting as unread; C&theGGE is lightly bumped to the top corner; J&theGP has the original owner s name neatly to the top of the inside front cover. The slipcase, which draws together character illustrations from the cover art, is Very Good: rubbed to the edges and bumped to a top corner; the original owner (the recipient of the dedication from Dahl) has written his name and 1975 Exeter Autumn Book Fair neatly and faintly in ink twice to the outer. This is the first time we have seen this collection in such Fine condition and with the distinction of Dahl s signature(s). All orders are carefully wrapped in bubble wrap and sturdy cardboard. Octavo, original illustrated boards, illustrated. Presentation copy, inscribed by the author on the front free endpaper, "Blake Love Roald Dahl." In near fine condition. Illustrated by Donald Chaffin. In this story, a gentleman fox outwits three crass and vindictive farmers in order to protect his family from extinction. The beginning chapters describe the characters, the following sixteen present a constant stream of adventures as the bitter confrontation ensues between Mr. Fox and Boggis, Bunce and Bean. It was adapted into film by director Wes Anderson and released in 2009 and features the voices of George Clooney as Mr. Fox, Meryl Streep as Mrs Fox, Bill Murray as Badger, Hugo Guinness as Bunce, and Michael Gambon as Bean. About this Item: Unpublished. 16th April ., 1984. A single page typed letter, written by Roald Dahl on Gipsy House, Great Missenden letterhead, to the head of George Allen and Unwin publishers Rayner Unwin. With interesting content. Dahl writes "I thought you would be interested to know that Puffin want to bring out a new edition of "Charlie and the Chocolate Factory" and "The Great Glass Elevator" with fresh illustrations". Dahl continues that Puffin are looking for a new illustrator and suggests Raynor should get in touch, join forces and "save yourselves some money". Dahl expresses his wish to see "a nice new edition, preferably a bit smaller and thicker than the last one.". The letter concludes by requesting "twenty copies of "Fantastic Mr. Fox", debiting my royalty account". Signed "Roald" in black ink. The letter is in very good condition, folded twice. An excellent letter both in respect of content and association. Provenance: Rayner Unwin; thence by descent to Merlin Unwin.
