About this Item: Charles Scribner's Sons, New York, 1936. Hardcover. Condition: Very Good. Dust Jacket Condition: Good. 1st Edition. Exceptional painter Grant Wood illustrations place this book at the heart of American culture. This is a true-first edition, which is indicated by the date, which is the same on both the title page and the copyright page, where a Scribner upper case-"A" also appears. This Very Good condition book looks much better than its score indicates. I scored it down because of some water damage at the top of the back cover. Internally, the book is Very Good with some minor staining near the stitching on a couple pages--but not at all on any of Grant's images or Horn's text. The Good+ dust jacket flaps are complete and the original $2.00 price is intact; however, it is missing a good part of the back strip and a large chip at the right-top corner of the cover. About this Item: Scribner's, 1936. Hardcover. Condition: Very Good. Dust Jacket Condition: Good. Wood, Grant (illustrator). 1st Edition. NY, 1936, 1st, Scribner's. Cloth, 7¼x9¾, 78p, DW, ($2.00), chipped. Eight color pls and endpapers by Grant Wood. A summer spent on the grandparents farm. Guy Davenport reminds us that Wood belonged to a period of American art when satire was a norm; the age of Sinclair Lewis, H.L. Mencken, and James Thurber. It was a searchingly psychological satire, gentle by today s standards, civilized and yet keenly observant, and perfectly suited to these farm stories. Not ex-library, no internal marks, tight and clean. Seller Inventory # 46168

About this Item: Charles Scribner's Sons, New York, 1936. Hardcover. Condition: Very Good Plus. Grant Wood (illustrator). 1st Edition. First Edition (SD with Scribner's 'A' on the copyright page. A very rare signed copy by the author, Madeline Darrough Horn. Her signature is on the half-title page (see photo). I've found only two other copies of this book that she signed. These two were also signed by the illustrator, Grant Wood, and are priced at $600.00 and $650.00. There are eight beautiful full-page color plates, including the frontispiece, by Grant Wood, the American painter best known for his paintings depicting the rural American Midwest, particularly American Gothic . As you can see from the photos, the covers are in very nice condition. There are two tiny spots of soiling on the front, also some color fading at the margins. The illustration is in excellent condition. The spine is in very solid condition, with very clean and clear lettering. There is a light red pen jag off the top edge of the spine, and the spine is tanned. The rear cover has a circular spot (third photo), also couple of smaller ones to the left of it. The margins also have color fading. The corners and edges are in very good condition, without any rubbing. There is a tiny crease above the front bottom corner. It continues, lightly, on the first three pages. The page edges don't have any stains. The spine is not slanted and the book is very solidly bound. Very solidly bound from cover to cover, no cracks or spaces anywhere, no binding issues. The front and rear inside covers and end papers are quite beautifully rendered and unusual. The rear ones repeat the front ones. They are all orange and white. Each has six squares with a different drawing of a farm animal, so 12 drawings in total, repeated at the rear. All are perfectly clean and in very good condition. I turned over all the pages in the book, one by one, and can say that they are very, very clean. That is also very much the case with the illustrations. The pages are also in very good condition. I didn't see any conspicuous creases, any turned-down corner creases or dogeared corners. Nor are there any markings anywhere in the book. And there are no attachments of any kind, no bookplates, NOT ex-library. There is one 3/4 inch tear off the bottom edge of the dedication page. You don't really notice it until you turn the page and see it on the other side which is blank. There are no other tears on any of the pages. On the dedication page is printed 'To All Little Boys Especially Bill and Tom'. The previous owner (who was the first and only other owner) penned an inscription below that. It reads 'To Nebb (?) From Mrs. Jessup (?), June 9 '36.' And that covers everything having to do with condition. Take a look at the photos. Signed by Author(s). Seller Inventory # 002445

About this Item: Charles Scribner's Sons, New York, 1936. Hardcover. First / First "A" on copyright page. Grey cloth with white (age-toned to tan) color-illustrated dustjacket. Illustrated endpapers. 78 pp., Eight color plates by grant Wood, who may have inscribed the book on the half-title to an individual in very neat script which does not exactly match online signatures. A significant book featuring the illustrations of the famed artist and lithographer Grant Wood, who has inscribed the book on the half-title to an individual in very neat script which does not exactly match online signatures found. However, all online examples located seem to be illustrate his signature at the base of lithographs, which would be completed in a different setting than signing and inscribing a single volume or a group of volumes. There are distinct similarities, but also differences. No reason to doubt this signature, but cannot guarantee it. A very nice copy of this title notwithstanding this question! VG+/Good+ dustjacket with slight chipping to top edge near right side and splitting without loss to the lower front hinge area. Seller Inventory # 168863
