BOOK DETAILS:The pictorial boards are rubbed and scuffed in places and quite badly stained on the back panel. This stain will have been the result of the book being damp affected at some time. There is a small external split to the the spine.The internal webbing of both the front and the back hinges are slightly exposed the book would benefit for having received attention from an expert book restorer.There is light to moderate foxing within due to age. Mild page tanning to the pages.Tanning (or browning) is often present in older books and is the result of the paper ageing. Some mild scattered foxing is present within the book.Moderate foxing to the end papers and to the compressed page edges.No signs of previous ownership (no previous ownership inscriptions).No dust wrapper.The publisher refers to a map "bound in at the end of the volume" however there is no trace of this map anywhere in the book. It may have been removed (without trace) by a previous owner or it may be present in the second rather than this the first volume. Only Volume 1 is offered for sale here. Books a little leaned; spines darkened with lettering faint, and with small chips at ends and vertical cracks, now neatly repaired; ink owner name in top margin of each front cover; covers have short shallow chips to fore edges and corner creases; page edges tanned; generally VG otherwise, now tight in the bindings, text clean and unworn. Macmillan's Colonial Library # 317 & 318. This paper issue of the Colonial Library edition drops the plates and maps found in the larger Constable and Harper editions of 1897, though at least some of the more common hardcover issue came with a folding map. A classic of Arctic exploration. "Narrative of the First Fram Expedition, 1893-1896, led by Nansen, with the object of investigating the polar basin north of Eurasia by drifting in the ice with the currents northwest from the New Siberian Islands across or near the Pole." - AB 11983.
