Owner's signature on ffep, no other marks, clean and bright, tight binding. The illustrated cloth boards have significant wear to the spines. It looks like a brief encounter with a liquid which has smudged away most of the spine title and illustration. By contrast, the front illustrations are in excellent condition. BOOK DETAILS:The pictorial boards are rubbed and scuffed in places and quite badly stained on the back panel. This stain will have been the result of the book being damp affected at some time. There is a small external split to the the spine.The internal webbing of both the front and the back hinges are slightly exposed the book would benefit for having received attention from an expert book restorer.There is light to moderate foxing within due to age. Mild page tanning to the pages.Tanning (or browning) is often present in older books and is the result of the paper ageing. Some mild scattered foxing is present within the book.Moderate foxing to the end papers and to the compressed page edges.No signs of previous ownership (no previous ownership inscriptions).No dust wrapper.The publisher refers to a map "bound in at the end of the volume" however there is no trace of this map anywhere in the book. It may have been removed (without trace) by a previous owner or it may be present in the second rather than this the first volume. Only Volume 1 is offered for sale here. Macmillan's Colonial Library # 317 & 318. This paper issue of the Colonial Library edition drops the plates and maps found in the larger Constable and Harper editions of 1897, though at least some of the more common hardcover issue came with a folding map. A classic of Arctic exploration. About this Item: Constable, 1900. 8vo., First Edition thus, with portrait frontispiece (original tissue guard present), 16 plates, 6 full-page illustrations in the text and 2 maps (one folding), tiny contemporary inscription on title; original red cloth, upper board blocked in blind, gilt back, uncut, top mildly dust-soiled, upper board unevenly faded at upper edge, backstrip mildly faded (but all gilt wholly legible), backstrip frayed at head else a very good, firm, clean copy. With the nineteenth-century engraved armorial bookplate of Richard Hampson Joynson on front paste-down, and 32pp publisher's catalogue bound in at end. The first single-volume version of Nansen's account of the Norwegian Polar Expedition 1893-96 (first published in two volumes in 1897). Sverdrup was captain of the Fram. Joynson was a leading Manchester silk manufacturer residing in Bowdon, Cheshire. His only daughter married Viscount Brentford. Seller Inventory # 19072
