About this Item: Henry Holt and Co, New York, 1940. Hardcover. Condition: Very Good. Dust Jacket Condition: Good. First Edition. First American Edition. 92 pp. 4to. Bright color ills. Published in France under the title "Patapoufs et Filifers." This edition translated by Rosemary Benet. Blue cover has darker blue box stamped on front containing title and illustration. Darker blue title on spine. Corners lightly bumped. Spine has slight wear at ends, and there are touches of edgewear on bottom edges. There are traces of soil to lower front cover, and upper front cover is a bit warped. All in all, really a very good cover. Dust jacket, in protective cover, is unclipped. It is chipped at extremities, somewhat soiled, and faded on spine. A 1" chip at head of spine is the largest loss of integrity. Less than perfect, this dj is nevertheless a rare survivor. Endpapers in full color are detailed coats of arms for the two rival nations - the ascetic Thinifers and the gourmand Fatapoufs. Gift inscrip. in red ink on half-title has run a bit. This droll and lighthearted fable of two French brothers (one fat, one thin) who become enmeshed in the affairs of these perpetually warring countries, is very amusing and, possibly, a satire of the political situation in Europe at the time. Maurois's sympathies seem to lie with the pleasure-seekers. Engagingly illustrated in full color. Seller Inventory # 8398
