About this Item: Printed by J. McGowan for C. S. Arnold, London, 1823. 4th edition [stated]. xxxiv, [1], 32 [i.e., 64], [3 (blank)], 4 pp. In the "Book of Fate", facing pages have duplicate page numbers. Last 4 pages adverts, dated December 1, 1823. Untrimmed. Fold-out frontis, "Questions which may be put to the Oracle", mounted on linen. Decorations to top of each page. 8vo. The Oraculum was originally discovered in one of the Royal tombs of Egypt during an 1801 French military expedition and, at Napoleon?s request, was translated by the famous German scholar and antiquarian, Kirchenhoffer. Apparently consulting it ?before every important occasion?, the book became one of the emperor?s most treasured possessions. It was found among his personal possessions after the defeat of his army at Leipzig in 1813 and first translated into English in 1822." [POKF]. The work became a very popular book of the period, with at least 10 editions issued by 1825. OCLC shows 2 institutional holdings of this 4th edition. Contemporaneous editions now somewhat uncommon in the trade. Wear to boards, with title label partially removed [bottom portion].
