Francis Duffy (1871-1932 ) served as Chaplain for "The Fighting 69th", largely an Irish regiment, during World War One. Loved by the troops, his heroism was recognized and he became the most highly decorated cleric in the history of the United States Army. Duffy's autobiography was begun by his friend, the poet Joyce Kilmer, who served in the 69th until his battlefield death. This is a Very Good (Plus) copy of the First Edition. A scarce title. Green cloth binding with titling in black on the spine and front cover. Clean text; 382 pages. Frontis photograph of "Wild Bill" Donovan, who would found the OSS [eventually the CIA]; seven other illustrations within. Endpapers illustrated with photographs. This copy has been SIGNED by Duffy on the half-title page. Laid-in is a newspaper clipping regarding a ceremony at Duffy's statue in New York. Very mildly bumped on two corners and with faint rubbing to the head and foot of the spine. There has been profesional reinforcement to the half-title and a the title page. This is a very rare scarce inscribed & signed copy by Father Duffy and inscribed to Dan Brady one of the board members of the 165th Infantry, In the book Father Duffy praises Brady service ( World War One "THE FIGHTING 69TH." ). Also with this copy is the extremely rare dust jacket . Condition : Very Good with very light edge rubs . Dust Jacket : Good with small rips chips and old repairs . Size: 8vo - over 7¾ - 9¾" tall.
