The letters and correspondence of one of the most fascinating naval figures of the 20th century, 'Jacky' Fisher, who, in Professor Marder's opinion, was 'Britain's greatest admiral since Nelson.' Fisher has been described as a man who was regarded by his contemporaries in the Royal Navy either 'as a genius who raised the efficiency of the Fleet to a peak never reached before, or, an evil old man who played havoc with naval discipline and efficiency.' This important three-volume study sheds new light and introduces new material on Fisher while also revealing much about British naval policy of his era and of the Navy in general from the ironclad period onwards. His letters reveal what a remarkable man Fisher really was. He was certainly one of the most colourful and controversial admirals in the long annals of the Royal Navy. Marder's celebrated trilogy adds much to our knowledge and perception of Fisher and appraises his role in preparing the British Navy for war in the early years of the last century. Lord Fisher of Kilverstone (1841-1920) was born in Ceylon and entered the Navy in 1854. He served on the China station 1856-1861, became Second Sea Lord 1902-1903, C-in-C Portsmouth 1903-1904, and First Sea Lord 1904-1910 & 1914-1915. A great naval administrator, strategist, gunnery expert and seaman, it was Fisher who scrapped obsolete ships and brought in the dreadnoughts Ð ruffling Beresford's feathers along the way. These letters are essential for a fuller understanding of the naval shake-up leading up to war in 1914. Seller Inventory # C142B145
