About this Item: The Caxton Press, Cincinnati, 1930. Hardcover. First, Limited Edition. Lloyd here revisits the setting of his highly successful 1900 story collection, Stringtown on the Pike, to present a fictionalized portrait of a real-life Jewish immigrant peddler who flourished in Boone County, Kentucky in the years following the Civil War. Illustrated throughout with photographic and line text illustrations, plates, and maps. A typically elaborate and eccentric production by Lloyd, the pharmacist, inventor and author whose other works included the early science fiction classic Etidorhpa (1895). Tall octavo (24cm). Publisher's brown, beveled cloth boards with applied pictorial portrait; spine and front cover lettered in gilt; xxix, 354pp; illus. Text illustrations and plates by J. Augustus Knapp; also illustrated with photographs (halftones) in text. "Author's Edition," limited to 500 copies, this copy lengthily inscribed by the author on limitation page: "To Dr. Albert P. Mathews and Mrs Mathews I take pleasure in presenting this. If it has no other virtues - surely, the printer has made of it a success. By the way Dr. Mathews, you don't know how much pleasure I take in a just-judge and a fair critic / Sincerely, John Uri Lloyd," dated December 6, 1930. Just touched at corners and base of spine, scattered foxing (primarily on pages touched by the halftone plates); still a bright, Near Fine, unusually well-preserved copy. Seller Inventory # 16760
