The film tells the story of a working-class African-American family in the 1950s and how the father (Denzel Washington) tries to raise his son (Stephen Henderson) with his wife (Viola Davis), while coming to terms with the events of his life. Viola Davis won an Oscar for Best Supporting Actress and the film was nominated for three more; Best Picture, Best Actor (Washington), and Best Adapted Screenplay. Ms. Davis also won a Golden Globe and Mr. Washington was nominated for one.
