Item Description: New York: The Viking Press, 1936, 1936. Quarto. Original pink paper covered boards, grey cloth spine, lettering to spine in pink, pictorial endpapers, with the dust jacket. Housed in a pink quarter morocco solander box by the Chelsea Bindery. An excellent copy in dust jacket with light rubbing to ends of spine and a bit of light soiling to top edges and flap folds. Black and white illustrations throughout by Robert Lawson. First edition, first printing. A beautiful copy of this classic children's tale, of a bull who liked to smell flowers under the cork tree rather than fight in bull fights. Published just months before the outbreak of the Spanish Civil War, many saw it as a Pacifist title. It was banned in several countries, including Spain. Hitler ordered the title to be burned, while Stalin allowed it to be the only non communist children's title allowed in Poland and Mahatma Gandhi proclaimed it as his favourite book. This title was also the basis for the 1938 Walt Disney animated short which won the Academy Award that year in the best short film category. Bookseller Inventory # 92666

Item Description: Hamish Hamilton, London, 1937. Hardcover. Book Condition: Very Good. Dust Jacket Condition: Good. Lawson, Robert (illustrator). First U.K. Edition. Hardcover in unclipped dustjacket which is soiled with a couple of paint splodges to front; sunning to spine area; rubbing and several small closed tears to edges; chips to spine tips; rubbing and one small hole to spine joints. The boards are clean and fresh, having been nicely protected by the dj, although edges are rubbed and there's a small faded patch to spine. Internally clean, crisp and tight without inscriptions and with only very light spotting to a few pages. Page edges dusty. Unpaginated. The story of Ferdinand the bull who liked to sit quietly under a cork tree and smell the flowers rather than fight like the other bulls. The book was first published in 1936, nine months before the outbreak of the Spanish Civil War, and was seen by many Franco supporters as a pacifist story. It was banned in many countries, including Spain (where it remained banned until after Franco's death). In Nazi Germany, Adolf Hitler ordered the book burned (as "degenerate democratic propaganda") but following the defeat of Germany at the end of WWII, 30,000 copies were quickly published and given out to the country's children in order to encourage peace. The Story of Ferdinand was made into an animated film by the Walt Disney studios in 1938. Size: 8vo - over 7¾" - 9¾" tall. Bookseller Inventory # 003355
