About this Item: Miller, Orton & Mulligan, Auburn and Buffalo, 1854. Hardcover. Condition: Good. First Edition. Light brown cloth, blind stamped front and rear panels, gilt stamped spine. The volume has bumped corners and spine ends (with light fraying on the spine ends)and is soiled on the facing panels. The spine is sunned, diminishing the gilt intensity and making it somewhat difficult to read, and there are small holes (worm?) in the gutters extending to the endpaper in front. The interior has mild foxing on the pastedowns and endpaper, occasional light foxing elsewhere, some soiling and pencilled names on the front and second endpapers. A Good only copy. Spine gilt strong but not brilliant, cloth fraying at top and bottom of spine and at tips, hinges tight, contents clean and crisp but with some foxing, particularly to plates, and a dampstain visible only on endpapers and plates in lower foredge corner. About this Item: London - Nathaniel Cooke, 1853. Hardcover. Condition: GOOD ONLY. First edition. A collection of short works by Fanny Fern. Some of the short stories and articles are originally from magazines such as Boston Olive Branch, The Boston True Flag as well as the New York Musical World and Times. Others are original for this work. With several illustrations throughout. This is the second edition, issued the same year as the first edition. This was Fanny Fern's first book and became an instant bestseller. Fanny Fern is a pseudonym for Sara Payson Willis. Willis was an American newspaper columnist, humorist, novelist and children's author. Condition: In original full cloth binding with gilt stamping to spine and front board. Externally, sound with slight rubbing to the head and tail of spine. Loss to cloth at rear joint and to the head and tail of spine. Boards have faded with a few handling marks. Front hinge is tender. Rear hinge has failed causing backstrip to lift at rear. Gift inscription to recto of front endpaper, 'Mrs Fraser of her friend Mrs Jane Capeland 1908. Another gift inscription dated 1854 to the verso of front endpaper, 'To Mrs Lewis Aberdeen Feb 1854. ' Internally, generally firmly bound though strained in places. Publisher's original green cloth, blindstamped borders and decoration, central gilt vignette, gilt decorated spine, TEG. Born in Portland, Maine but raised in Boston, Sarah Payson Willis Parton (1811-1872) deserted her unbearable husband (who divorced her), and began to write, adopting the pseudonym 'Fanny Fern' to support herself and her children. The weekly columns by "Fanny Fern" appeared in the Boston Olive Branch, the New York Musical World and Times, and the Philadelphia Saturday Evening Post. She compiled many collections of her columns (this her first and a best-seller). "In 1856, after having a prenuptial agreement drawn up, which gave Fern rights to her earnings before and after their marriage, she married James Parton" (New England Univ., Maine Women Writers Collection). Some loss to spine head and tail, lt. wear to corners, plates mod.-heavy foxed, occasional lt. smudges, otherwise a Very Good copy. Scarce in first printing. From the collection of Martin Stone.
