About this Item: 1st ed., 1959. Xi + 266 pp., cold., frontis., + numerous photo-plates + 14 ills., + 20 maps, 9 of which are fldg. D.j., 22 x 14cm. Spine of d.j., a little faded with some foxing to d.j., & top edge but internally very clean & bright ; o/w Nr.FINE. Inscription on f.e.p., reads "Presented to Major John Boys O.B.E. o/c 107 Fd Sqn R.E.(V) by Col. D.G.A. Taylor T.D. o/c 252 Fd Corp RE at Lille 1939 when in Dec it was taken on the strength of 5th British Division." The Fifth (British) Division in the Second World War was, as it always had been, a regular service Division. It found itself in France in 1939 and 1940 and was one of the few British Divisions to fight in front of the Maginot Line. It played a prominent part in the Battle of France and withdrew via Dunkirk. Part of the Division took part in the fighting in Norway. Later, the "Y", the well-known Divisional Sign, was seen in Madagascar, India, Iraq, Persia and other countries in the Middle East. As part of the 8th Army the Division made the assault landing in Sicily and was the first British Division to land in Italy on 3rd December, 1943. After a year of continuous fighting in Sicily and Italy, 5th Division entered Rome in June, 1944. After rest and refit in the Middle East, it then embarked for Germany and played its full part in the final defeat of the enemy in May, 1945. It was the most travelled Division in the British Army and well earned its nickname "The Globe-Trotters". Illustrated with a coloured frontispiece, numerous photograph plates, fourteen illustrations and twenty maps, nine of which are folding, this is a near fine copy preserved in its dust-jacket. Furthermore it comes with an interesting provenance found in an inscription that reads "Presented to Major John Boys O.B.E. o/c 107 Fd Sqn R.E.(V) by Col. D.G.A. Taylor T.D. o/c 252 Fd Corp RE at Lille 1939 when in Dec it was taken on the strength of 5th British Division.". Seller Inventory # C145B255
