About this Item: Studio Limited, London, 1928. Hard Cover. Condition: VG-. Oblong album in stiff, light green soft-textured card wraps with darker green titles to front, 7 1/4" x 10". 8pp.+32 duotone plates. Index to front. "Best Films" guide to 1927-28, remarkable for its emphasis on film-as-art (as outlined in preliminary essay) and the selections (which have strongly withstood -- and have defined -- the tests of time). Plates include analyses of composition, lighting, etc. in terms of dramatic/symbolic effect. Includes consideration of work by (among others) Chaplain ("Circus"), Lang ("Metropolis"), Hitchcock ("Lodger"), Murnau ("Faust"), Pommer, Pabst, Raoul Walsh, and Man Ray ("Emak Bakia"). Stills include (in role) Dolores del Rio, Pola Negri and Janet Gaynor. VG-. Boards are good only, with not-through stress crack (no bending) down length of front board, soil and toning all around boards, spine card missing with tight webbed-binding exposed. Plates, however, are all present and VG to VG+ with only occasional light toning (three plates have pencil marks added to illustrate comments on composition). Text toned, but clean and unmarked. Pencilled note on prev. owner's purchase (Paris, 1928) to ffep. Seller Inventory # 002990
