Both texts in very good, tight, clean condition, with only a very small number of light fox speckles. Pagination 223, 239. Vol 1 has the publisher's catalogue at the front. Interesting inscription on the front blank end paper, showing that the books came from the "headmaster's house library" in 1848, the man in question being the head of the famous Charterhouse School. No labels or other markings. The original hardback cloth bindings, with gilt titles to the spines, are good and tight, with some fading and minor wear to the extremities. Consisting chiefly of his letters not before published, with sketches of some of his companions. By Thomas Noon Talfourd, one of his executors. Charles Lamb (10 February 1775 27 December 1834) was an English essayist, best known for his Essays of Elia and for the children's book Tales from Shakespeare, which he produced with his sister, Mary Lamb (17641847). Lamb has been referred to by E. V. Lucas, his principal biographer, as the most lovable figure in English literature. Condition: In embossed brown cloth bindings with gilt lettering to the spines. Externally, a trifle rubbed. Spines are cocked and sunned. Backstrip is lifting on volume I. Front board is held by cords only on volume II. Corners are bumped. Internally, binding is loosening in places. Front hinge is weak on volume II. There is a bookseller's label to the front pastedown in volume I. Overall: GOOD ONLY. Seller Inventory # 036512

Laid in is an autograph letter, signed from the poet Bernard Barton to Yorke (sic) Clarke Esq. in the form of a punning poem based upon the motto on a wafer sent him which reads - "I trouble you with a line." The poem is one full page long and is dated 9/5/1840. Barton was a Quaker poet and a friend of Southey as well as one of Lamb's intimate circle of friends. A nice association. Later 3/4 maroon crushed levant over marbled boards by Bayntun, raised bands, t.e.g. Fine. There is a hole on the left edge of the loosely laid in letter where someone had removed it from a mounting.
