About this Item: The Heritage Press, 1940. Hardcover. Condition: Fine. Norman Rockwell (illustrator). Mark Twain was Forty-nine when he wrote the Adventures of Huckleberry finn. Although Huck Finn is officially the sequel to Tom Sawyer, it is generally believed to be the greatest work of American fiction. Into Huck Finn, Mark Twain poured all of his own memories of his own boyhood, all of the impish re-creations which came to his mind, on the mischief wrought by those imps who are boys in a small town on the Mississippi. Huck Finn is generally regarded as the greatest work of American fiction, I mean literally many discerning critics, many respected and widely-read novelist of today and yesterday, both in England and America , agree with this statement. What makes this illustrated copy one of the most cherished Heritage Press books is the illustrator, Norman Rockwell. Rockwell had the distinction in the minds of many that he was at the time of publication (1940) the greatest painter in America. A quite, unassuming person, Rockwell and his wife Molly lived in Stockbridge Mass. He is probably best known for his iconic Saturday Evening Post covers. He worked on and off for four years to illustrate this wonderful edition. There are eight full color glossy illustrations and many black and white sketches and decorations. Book is very fine , pristine unmarked condition, would be as new except for a slightly faced spine. The publishers slipcase is near fine with custom made paper label at spine. Included is a copy of Sandglass #4-DR, a Heritage Club newsletter discussing this book. This is a very special collectible for the Twain or Rockwell collector. Scarce. Seller Inventory # 001156

About this Item: 1936. [original drawings by Rockwell] [In Two Volumes, boxed.] New York: The Heritage Press, 1936 | 1940. Original green | orange cloth lettered on the spine in gilt, with front cover portrait, in original paper-covered board box with integral wraparound slip. Heritage Press editions, each with eight color plates tipped onto captioned leaves, plus black-and-white chapter headings, all by Norman Rockwell. Both volumes are in fine condition except that their spines are a little dusty. Included is the uncommon original box ("two volumes -- boxed together -- $5"); it is in good-to-very good condition, with some wear on the joints.~Each volume is a presentation copy from Norman Rockwell, inscribed on each half-title with an original pen-and-ink drawing of a dog and reading "To Ted Slocum | Faithfully yours | Norman Rockwell" [with his signature in his characteristic block letters]. On a number of presentation occasions Rockwell did this drawing, which features a white mutt with both ears and one side of its face black, a wagging tail, and with a tin can at the end of a string (the can is similar to the one appearing in Rockwell's sketch on the TOM SAWYER half-title).~For Norman Rockwell, dogs were important elements of both his artwork and his personal life. Realizing the viewer appeal of animals in illustrated narratives, he intentionally placed them as central figures in his compositions; it was typical for him to include them in Saturday Evening Post covers, advertising illustrations and family Christmas cards. Rockwell's dogs accompanied him to the studio, occasionally napping on the floor alongside him as he worked. He also borrowed neighbors' dogs to serve as models. In his reference files, Rockwell kept hundreds of photographs, negatives and magazine clippings of dogs for use in his art. "Mutts," the heading for file folders of such images, points to Rockwell's personal preference for lovable mongrels [Kanzenberg].~In all, a highly desirable set. Seller Inventory # 14071

About this Item: Fernand Mourlot, Paris, 1972. Rockwell, Norman (illustrator). One of only 200 suites of full-color, 25 by 19 3/4-inch lithographs based on the artist's illustrations for the 1940 Heritage Press edition of the Twain classic. When he was commissioned in 1935 to illustrate the Press's new editions of Tom Sawyer and Huck Finn, Rockwell visited Hannibal, Missouri, to get a feel for the place where Twain grew up. Expecting urban sprawl to have made the town unrecognizable as the place Twain wrote about, Rockwell found exactly the opposite to be true. In his autobiography, he commented that Hannibal had turned Mark Twain into a kind of cottage industry by naming everything from markets to hotels to barber shops after him. Today, that list would include the Mark Twain Museum, where a number of Rockwell's own paintings for Huck Finn and Tom Sawyer hang on display. It is fitting that Rockwell, whose genius lay in his ability to portray an idealized vision of small-town America, and whose paintings often featured children, should have illustrated Huck Finn, the quintessential American coming-of-age tale. At the same time, it is perhaps a surprise that a man who admitted an aversion to life's rougher, seedier aspects would illustrate a novel with such an unsavory cast of characters including murderers, swindlers, drunkards, and thieves. This suite of illustrations, then, represents an intriguing union of two visionary artists whose varying, though essentially sympathetic, depictions of the American experience endure to this day. The eight illustrations in this suite include: "Then Miss Watson took me in the closet and prayed"; "Jim got down on his knees"; "Miss Mary Jane"; "My hands shook"; "Your eyes is lookin'"; "Then for three minutes, or maybe four"; "There warn't no harm in them"; and "When I lit my candle." All are printed on handmade Velin d'Arches paper and signed by the artist in a bold hand in the lower right corner. Housed in a tan canvas portfolio with tie straps. Portfolio with the usual "Huckelberry" misspelling to the front cover. Prints and portfolio very fine. (Claridge, pp.258-260). Seller Inventory # 20978
