About this Item: Penguin UK. Taschenbuch. Condition: Neu. Neuware - A daring work of experimental, Modernist genius, James Joyce's Finnegans Wake is one of the greatest literary achievements of the twentieth century, and the crowning glory of Joyce's life. The Penguin Modern Classics edition of includes an introduction by Seamus Deane 'riverrun, past Eve and Adam's, from swerve of shore to bend of bay, brings us by a commodius vicus of recirculation back to Howth Castle and Environs' Joyce's final work, Finnegan's Wake is his masterpiece of the night as Ulysses is of the day. Supreme linguistic virtuosity conjures up the dark underground worlds of sexuality and dream. Joyce undermines traditional storytelling and all official forms of English and confronts the different kinds of betrayal - cultural, political and sexual - that he saw at the heart of Irish history. Dazzlingly inventive, with passages of great lyrical beauty and humour, Finnegans Wake remains one of the most remarkable works of the twentieth century. James Joyce (1882-1941), the eldest of ten children, was born in Dublin, but exiled himself to Paris at twenty as a rebellion against his upbringing. He only returned to Ireland briefly from the continent but Dublin was at heart of his greatest works, Ulysses and Finnegans Wake. He lived in poverty until the last ten years of his life and was plagued by near blindness and the grief of his daughter's mental illness. If you enjoyed Finnegans Wake, you might like Virginia Woolf's The Waves, also available in Penguin Classics. 'An extraordinary performance, a transcription into a miniaturized form of the whole western literary tradition' Seamus Deane 688 pp. Englisch. Seller Inventory # 9780141183114

About this Item: The VIking Press, 1945. Hardcover. Condition: Good. 1st Edition. "FINNEGAN'S WAKE" by James Joyce. 1945 1st Edition, 4th Printing (stated). This edition contains "A list of corrections of misprints. Prepared by the author after publication of the first edition" at the end of the book. FINNEGAN'S WAKE A story with no real beginning or end (it ends in the middle of a sentence and begins in the middle of the same sentence), this "book of Doublends Jined" is as remarkable for its prose as for its circular structure. Written in a fantastic dream-language, forged from polyglot puns and portmanteau words, the Wake features some of Joyce's most hilarious characters: the Irish barkeep Humphrey Chimpden Earwicker, Shem the Penman, Shaun the Postman, and Anna Livia Plurabelle. Sixty years after its publication, it remains in Anthony Burgess's words, "a great comic vision, one of the few books of the world that can make us laugh aloud on nearly every page." Condition: The pages are in excellent condition - clean and white with no writing, stains, foxing or tears found. TIght binding. No loose pages. There is a crack at the front hinge before the title page. Pea-sized cloth tear at the upper-right corner of the spine; sharp corners. Seller Inventory # ABE-1530531938180

About this Item: Faber and Faber London, 1948. Hardcover. Condition: Near Fine. Dust Jacket Condition: Near Fine. A super copy of the 3rd reprint of the handsome Faber first edition, in a complete and protected unclipped jacket. Near Fine takes into account the age of the book. Wine dark stained top, as required, and a rough cut base to the text block, also required. Binding is a deep red cloth, almost entirely unfaded because it has always been jacketed. Original unclipped price on the jacket, 30 shillings. The publisher, to economise, had the original jacket price machine clipped and updated to the then current price. In 1948 the paper used in books was often still under War Economy conditions I suppose. No owner marks, not ex library. A great and attractive copy of an important book. Tiny signs of its age on the top of the jacket, but no real damage. A handsome production from Faber of a book which, if I can be perconal about it, is one of the undoubted masterpieces of the 20th Century. And let's not overlook the fact that it is also a very funny book. I find one can 'dip' into Finnegan at any time and unravel a page or two, and chortle while doing so. Language: eng. About this Item: Faber & Faber, London, 1939. First Signed limited edition. Octavo, original red cloth, titles to spine in gilt, top edge gilt, original publisher's yellow cloth slipcase. One of 425 numbered copies, this being number 251 signed by James Joyce on the limitation page. In fine condition, with the publishers slipcase. Housed in a custom half morocco clamshell box. Joyce began working on Finnegans Wake shortly after the 1922 publication of Ulysses. By 1924 installments of Joyce's new avant-garde work began to appear, in serialized form, in Parisian literary journals transatlantic review and transition, under the title "fragments from Work in Progress". The actual title of the work remained a secret until the book was published in its entirety, on 4 May 1939. The work has assumed a preeminent place in English literature. Anthony Burgess praised the book as "a great comic vision, one of the few books of the world that can make us laugh aloud on nearly every page."[14] Harold Bloom called the book "Joyce's masterpiece", and wrote that "[if] aesthetic merit were ever again to center the canon [Finnegans Wake] would be as close as our chaos could come to the heights of Shakespeare and Dante." Modern Library named it one of the 100 best English-language novels of the 20th century. Seller Inventory # 5068
