About this Item: Manuscript, pen and brown ink, with pencil, on paper (Good, chipping along edges with minor loss, old folds), 39 x 20.5 cm (15.5 x 8 inches). [‘Eastern Frontier’, Cape Colony], 1837. An original manuscript sketch map of the Grahamstown-Great Fish River region of South Africa, the strategically critical ‘Eastern Frontier’ of the Cape Colony, made immediately in the wake of the Sixth European-Xhosa War (1834-6). - This intriguing manuscript sketch map was made by an English settler, in 1837, and depicts the ‘Eastern Frontier’ region of the British Cape Colony, in the immediate wake of the Sixth European-Xhosa War (1834-6). Importantly, and as will be explained further, the map features the locations of several of the conflict’s key battles. The map’s scope embraces the "Sea" (Indian Ocean) coast roughly between the mouths of the Kareeg and Great Fish Rivers, and extends inland to include Grahamstown, a good stretch of the Great Fish River, a tract of the Keiskamma River, and further inland to a point just beyond Beaufort. Most of the territory depicted, being the lands west of the lower Great Fish and the Kat Rivers (known as the Albany and Beaufort Districts), is implicitly assumed to the part of the Cape Colony, inhabited largely by recently arrived English settlers. The territory beyond the lower Great Fish and Kat Rivers is labeled ‘Kafir Territory’, also known as Kaffreria, being the lands of the Xhosa, a nation of skilled warriors who had long resisted European encroachment. It is important to note that ‘Kafir’ is today considered a derogatory term for Black Africans, although curiously the word originally comes from an Arabic term for "infidel". The English settlements along the Eastern Frontier of the Cape Colony were anchored by the centres of Grahamstown, Bathurst and Beaufort, as shown here. However, the map features a wealth of other information, revealing the region to be a military frontier, including the locations of current and former British army outposts, such as "Fort Brown" and "Fort Willshire (abandoned)" (a forward position located in Xhosa territory); numerous trading posts; . About this Item: No Place 13th April, 1547. Folio, 1 1/2 pages (approx. 650 words), written in English in a neat legible Secretary hand, has been folded with integral blank leaf (docketed), some dustiness. The Manor of Yealmton was held by the Countess of Salisbury, Margaret Pole, in the reign of King Henry VIII but following her execution in 1541 the King gave it as dower first to Katherine Howard and then again to Catherine Parr- the latter being the 'Queen's Majesty' represented here. Under Parr, the land was farmed by one John Rollestone. Nicholas Upton (or Oppetun) had previously been the Administrator of the Manorial landholding for Margaret Pole but on her demise the King compensated Upton by granting him a 21-year lease on land at nearbye Stokenham Park, which bordered Parr's estate at the said river. The judgement on side 2 upholds the exclusive rights of the Lord of the Manor (i.e. Catherine Parr) to fish the river and it is interesting to note that one of the 4 named decision-makers, Thomas Arundell, was at this time Chancellor of the Household to the Dowager Queen Catherine. The text is written in English, three months in to the reign of Edward VI. Seller Inventory # 15874

Huge volume containing an important collection of articles and papers on fish and especially eels, by the Danish biologist Ernst Johannes Schmidt (1877-1933), probably all his papers published in this period. The book opens with a general title-page Havundersøgelser (Ocean studies), followed by a portrait, a letter and all the articles. Most of them are written in English, although a few are in Danish, German or French. Discussed in the articles are eels and their larvae, cod, halibut, sun-fishes and other fish, and one deals with various turtle species in the Danish West Indies. Many of the articles include illustrations in text, folding plates, maps and/or tables, showing migration routes, a fish's growth stages etc. Full list of contents available on request.Browned throughout, some articles have frayed or slightly torn margins or dog ears.
