About this Item: Michael Joseph, London, 1957. Hardcover. Condition: Very Good. No Jacket. 1st Edition. Black cloth binding with titles in red on spine. browned page edges, crease to folding map in rear, occasional internal foxing of just a spot or two every 50 pages or so. Edges lightly bumped . Previous owners name blacked out on ffep. Signed by both the authour and his wife "Peter Molloy Yvonne Molloy October 1957" This book was first published in 1957, has 254 pages, 46 B/W photos, 13 chapters, 1 folded map of southern Sudan at the rear of the book. The book is dedicated to 'Fiona'. The foreword is by Capt Keith Caldwell. Colonel Peter Molloy (1915 - 2000) was for 6 years a Game Warden in the south Sudan. He traveled with his wife Yvonne, assembling information of tribal life and animals, mostly on foot safaris. Their house was in JUBA. In 1948, Molloy takes the job of Assistant Game Warden in Sudan, covering the area as big as Tanzania. He meets Yvonne in Khartoum and they soon marry and move to Juba. Soon, they start a good garden and adopt animals. Yvonne's first bush life was on the Nile, at MONGALLA, to see the elephants. Molloy brings down a 105 and 103 lbs tusker. Later he visits Badingilu pool with its extensive wildlife. Fishing was possible on Lake Nyubor, which also had beautiful bird life. Here Molloy photographs the rare Mrs Grays Lechwe. The Southern National Park has the rare Giant Eland and the Zande forest, some of the rare forest wildlife, especially the bongo. Peter and Yvonne Molloy take a river trip on the steamer 'Wingate', north, on the Nile to MALAKAL and then south again in a lorry on dusty roads. They run out of water and barely get back to the water supply. In 1952, Molloy explores 100 miles stretch of country west of Juba -'Moru Foot trek'. They were lucky to take a picture of Giant Eland bull. Returning to their Juba house, they looked forward to seeing their garden and animal zoo of wildlife babies. The highest peak in the area is Mt KINYETI(10,456ft) and the Kinyeti river was full of trout. The 'Acholi elephant' here carries the finest ivory in the world - soft, thick, heavy and creamy white. Next, they visit the BOMA plateau to the east, which is about 20 miles long(north to south). In the Mandari country, they hunt for elephants. Both Yvonne and Peter suffer with bilharzia and dysentery. They witness elephants rescuing a fallen bull elephant. At NIMULE National Park, there is excellent mountain and river scenery with elephants, white rhino, buffalo and hippo. Molloy then moved to Tanganyika as director of National Parks.
