All pages tight in binding. First inscription to top of front free end paper is that of W. V. Grigson (Ch. Ch. Oxon.) December 1914" (From Wikipedia-Sir Wilfrid Vernon Grigson CSI (1896 - 26 November 1948) [1] was a British soldier and civil servant. Grigson was born in 1896 in the Vicarage at Pelynt to Canon William Shuckforth Grigson and Mary Beatrice Boldero, and was one of seven brothers, including Geoffrey Grigson, Kenneth Grigson and John Grigson. Five of the brothers died during the First and Second World Wars (the surviving brother being Geoffrey Grigson).[ 2] Grigson was educated at Leatherhead before matriculating to Christ Church, Oxford. [2] During the First World War Grigson served as a Lieutenant in the Machine Gun Corps, serving in four different theatres of war. [2] After the war he joined the Indian Civil Service and rose up through the ranks, serving as Deputy Commissioner of the Central Provinces and Berar. He was made a Companion of the Order of the Star of India, and in 1948 was knighted. [2] On 26 November 1948 the plane he was traveling on crashed, killing all sixteen passengers and five crew. Second inscription on same page reads "MARY BLUNDEN OXFORD 1919" and then underneath it says "from Eddie". Edmund Blunden left the army in 1919, having married his first wife Mary in 1918, and took up his Oxford scholarship. There is a letter to his mother in 1916 signed Eddie, but there are other family letters signed more formally "E. C.Blunden". The handwriting in the message could be his, but equally Mary might have written the inscription after receiving the book. A rare piece of British history and literature. Seller Inventory # 1332345
