Geoffrey Chaucer (c1340s-1400) was a celebrated English poet, remembered for 'The Canterbury Tales'; he was also a philosopher and astronomer, as well as a bureaucrat and Member of Parliament. He wrote in Middle English and popularised it as a literary language when Latin and French were the primary languages used in England. 'The Canterbury Tales' was written between 1387 and 1400, and is a collection of twenty-four stories, some written in verse form and some prosaic. They are told as a storytelling contest between a group of pilgrims.Caroline F. E. Spurgeon (1869-1942) was a literary critic, and the first woman to be awarded a chair at the University of London; her works on Chaucer are still prominent in the study of his work.Contains twenty-four full plate illustrations.Collated, complete.In the publisher's original binding, with a wonderful gilt figure of Chaucer to the front board. In a full cloth binding. Externally very smart, minor bumping to extremities and and fading to the spine. Ownership inscription to the front endpaper. Internally firmly bound, pages generally bright and clean with the odd annotation in pencil. Very Good Indeed. book.
