About this Item: Amstelaedami/Lugd. Bat./Ultrajecti Apud R. & G. Wetstenios Sam. Luchtmans Jacobum Broedelet M.D.CC.XXVI. [Amsterdam, 1726]. Special copy with academic presentation leaf & arms of city of Amsterdam on binding., 1726. Hardcover. Condition: Very Good. No Jacket. 1st Edition. Folio, two volumes; size of bindings: 10 ¼ in. x 16 ¼ in. x 3 in. (thick), a special printed page in this copy, with engraved arms (by J. Goeree/J. Baptist) and name & date, added in ink: Abrahamus Visscher/Otto Arntzenius, I.U.D. [1 April, 1763]. Half-title; elaborate, and finely engraved frontispiece/titlepage by Gunst; printed titlepage in red and black with woodcut device; [4]pp., pp. 1-28, [28]pp., pp. 1-982; with two engraved plates of coins/medals at page 17 & 26 of first numbered section (these show the front & back of 41 pieces), small engraved map of Sinus Arabici pars, on p. 112. Volume 2: half-title; pp. 1-520; pp. 1-481; [63]pp. of indexes, etc., small engraved map at p. 327, small woodcut of candlestick/menorah, at p. 415. Bound in full, old vellum, gilt, over boards, with seven raised bands on spine, and small gilt arms in compartments, gilt bands across spine, richly gilt borders on covers, framing a larger gilt armorial design (the city of Amsterdam, according to an inked note on the endpaper of the first volume); headbands; lacking the silk ties. Former owner's printed book labels on the front paste-downs of each volume. The front outer hinges show splitting to the vellum, dusting to the cover surfaces. Some staining to book edges/margins, a little age-related tanning; but the interior is generally, clean and crisp. This appears to be a copy that was specially bound and awarded to a student in 1763: "Ingenuum magnaeque spei Adolescentem, {Abrahmum de Visscher,} Spatio literario a Carceribus ad Metam feliciter & cum laude decurso, Hoc honorificae missionis monumento lubentes ornant ex decreto, in frequenti virorum doctissimorum consessu, Amplissimi Dd. Coss. & Scholarchae Amstelaedamenses. [engraved arms] Quod testor {Otto Arntzenius, J.U.D.} Gymnasi publici Amstelaedamensis Rector. Promotione verna, {D. I. April [-]LX III}" [1763; {-} = inked inscriptions]. "[-]it must not be forgotten that this work contains the readings of two MSS. contained in the Leyden library, and some observations of Vossius and Cocceus found in the margin of a copy of the editio princeps. It has also a collation of a MS. Belonging to Frederick Rotsgard, formerly secretary of state to the King of Denmark; a great collector of books, and whose library was sold by auction in London, A.D. 1727. Fine copies of this edition bring a considerable price; and those on large paper are of unusual occurrence." Dibdin, Classics, 1827; Vol. 2, p. 133. (Greek text with Latin). Weight: 22 lbs. Postage may be extra on this item. Seller Inventory # ABE-544983909
