About this Item: Reynal & Hitchcock, New York, 1942. Hardcover. Condition: Very Good. Illustrated by Bernard Lamotte (illustrator). States "Second Printing, February, 1942." No dust jacket. Spine moderately faded / discolored. The flier waxes philosophic about going through the absurd motions of war and defeat. Because the French had spread their planes thinly along the length of the frontier -- where the army generals wanted to use them mostly for reconnaissance -- they could never match the concentrations of German bombers or fighters at any one point, with the result that the French soldier came to assume any plane overhead was German, and to fire indiscriminately at their own fliers. The majority of the author's unit perished in 1940, flying pointless reconnaissance sorties because it was "their duty." 255 pp. Seller Inventory # 005113

First published in the UK in September 1942, this is a second impression of later the same month. Edge wear and chipping to top and bottom of jacket, 1" loss to top and bottom of spine, corners and folds rubbed with small loss, some browning to page block (printed on war economy paper). The French writer and aviator Antoine de Saint-Exupery (1900-1944), was born in Lyons. His books are distinguished by a poetic evocation of the romance and discipline of flying. Saint-Exupery's popular children's book THE LITTLE PRINCE is also read by adults for its allegorical meaning. Saint-Exupery's plane disappeared during a mission in World War II. In 1998 a bracelet bearing Saint-Exupery's name was recovered on an island south of Marseilles, and in 2000 a diver, found the partial remains of a Lockheed P-38 Lightning spread over thousands of square metres of the seabed off the coast of Marseille, near where the bracelet was previously found. The aircraft was confirmed as Saint-Exupery's and its remains are now exhibited in Paris. Seller Inventory # 005931
