About this Item: Madrid, Oficina Real, y a costa de Nicolas Rodriguez Franco, 1723., 1723. (32), 268, (12) pp. Folio. With 1 folded table. (40), 366, (56) SS. 1) Sabin 98745; Palau VII,126. 2) Sabin 3349; Palau VII,126. Second edition of Garcilaso de la Verga's important work on Hernando de Soto and the aborigines of Florida. The work was edited by Andres Gonzalez Barcia as a companion to his "Ensayo cronologico.", which is bound in! The first edition of this book is extremely rare and was published in two issues in Lisbon in 1605. Garcilaso de la Vega, a half-Incan historian, obtained a great portion of material contained in this work directly from a member of De Soto's ill-fated expedition, as well as from two manuscripts of unquestioned authority written by two other members of the expedition. During the 19th century Garcilaso's works on the conquests of Peru and Florida became subject to skepticism on the part of some historians, time and further scholarship have established their authenticity, and this work is now regarded as one of the primary works on the events with which it deals (for further information see Field on Garcilaso de la Vega's life and works). Old ownership entry on first fly-leaf in Spanish (Cadiz, en 1802?), several smaller worm holes, sometimes with loss of letters, most severe on pages 100-171 of the first work, binding with some smaller restorations on spine and corners, otherwise a remarkable fresh and clean copy. Florida. Seller Inventory # 24416
