About this Item: Hearse Press, 1960. Soft cover. Condition: Near Fine. No Jacket. 1st Edition. Bukowski, Charles. FLOWER, FIST AND BESTIAL WAIL - INSCRIBED. Eureka, CA: Hearse Press, [1960]. First Edition. Slim octavo (21cm); illustrated card wrappers, stapled; [28]pp. Lengthily inscribed by the author on verso of front wrapper: "Dear Reader - E.V. Griffith brought out this first collection of my poetry. As a first collection, long out of print, it might bring you $ or you might hide it under your shirt. It brought me stumbling into the poetry world after a solid 10 year drunk + hospitalization and near death. I have continued to drink and write, and, as you know, I will die. Charles Bukowski." Beneath his inscription, Bukowski has drawn a small self-portrait, and has added a drawing of a potted flower in yellow paint beneath his name on the title page. Pinpoint wear to upper corners, else Fine. A superb copy of the author's first book, produced after numerous delays by early advocate and Hearse Press publisher E.V. Griffith. A lengthy, early, and humorous inscription written not quite as late as the 1970's (when Bukowski produced a small "Author's Edition" out of leftover copies), but likely around the time his literary reputation had just begun to take off. Krumhansl 3; Dorbin A1. Inscribed by Author(s). Seller Inventory # ABE-1539311354418

About this Item: Hearse Press, Eureka, CA, 1960. First Edition. First Edition. One of no more than five "author's edition" copies with an original illustration by the author bound in. During the 1970s, Bukowski still had a number of copies of this book and decided to make between three and five unique copies by binding in original artwork or poetry--beginning a practice that would continue later with the author's Black Sparrow Press publications. The author's literary debut, a chapbook of poetry, preceded by two broadsides. The illustration in this copy shows an old man pointing his cane (or possibly gun) at a young boy and growling: "What do you know about sex?" Bukowski would go on to international fame and become one of the most prolific modern writers on the west coast, continuing an ethos begun by Jack Kerouac, Allen Ginsberg, and John Fante. Publisher's illustrated saddle-stitched wrappers, 8.25 x 5.35 inches, 28 unnumbered pages. Fine. In a cloth clamshell box, Near Fine. Krumhansl 3. Seller Inventory # 136290
