First edition, 1958. Hardback. xvi, 272pp Dust jacket in a protective sleeve. Edward Armstrong was also the author of the New Naturalist Monograph on the wren. His wide scholarship and talents fitted him outstandingly for this book, which could only have been written by someone with his deep understanding, not only of ornithology, but also of social anthropology and comparative religion. The author has selected a number of familiar birds - such as the swan, the raven, the owl, the robin and the wren - and has traced magico-religious beliefs concerning them as far back in time as possible, to the cultures in which these beliefs arose. Many odd and interesting facts are cited and explained - for example the custom of breaking the wish bone, and of fables concerning weather-prophet birds and the generation of the Barnacle Goose from shell-fish. This book treats a group of folklore beliefs as a series of artifacts would be treated by an archaeologist, classifying them in order according to epochs. Archaeological data, as well as oral and literary traditions, have been used to illustrate the origins and significance of the current folklore. The book is illustrated with over 140 photographs and line drawings. Jacket design by Clifford and Rosemary Ellis. Colour frontispiece. Book in very good condition. A little soiling/spotting to text block edges - mostly top and fore edges. Just a little spotting to endpapers. Internally clean and bright. Dust jacket very good and unclipped. A little colour fade and some slight discolouration to spine. Rear panel bery lightly soiled. Book.

8vo. From Eric Hosking s library with his bookplate to front pastedown. Fine hardback in nr. fine dw., with small chip at foot of spine. Appears unread. Not price clipped. Eric Hosking was Perhaps the most famous bird photographer ever to have lived (Gemma Padley). Deservedly feted for his photographic skills, as with his many other talents, carried with modesty and charm Eric Hosking was, undeniably, a great gentle man of 20th century photography (John Chillingworth). Hosking was part of the New Naturalist Editorial Board and attended their first meeting in January 1943 where he would take on the role as photographic editor. Hosking had a complete collection of New Naturalists and he 'took great care of the books themselves' (Bernhard and Loe).
