About this Item: The American Publishing Co, Hartford, Ct, 1897. Condition: Very Good. First edition. The Estelle Doheny copy, with her red morocco bookplate. Presentation copy, inscribed: "Mr. James H. Scott with the compliments & respects of The Author. -- Good friends, good books & a sleepy conscience: this is the ideal life. Truly yours, Mark Twain | Vienna, April 10, 1898." First issue with just the Hartford imprint and signature 11 on p. 161. A Very Good copy, presenting well, but with both hinges cracked and repaired. Housed in a custom cloth clamshell case. Extremely rare presentation copy with the addition of one of Twain's most famous aphorisms in his hand. With a distinguished provenance. Twain's well regarded travelogue, published in 1897. Dire financial straits had forced Twain to take a worldwide lecture tour in 1895 and compose a collection of his travels and experiences. Twain traveled widely, including to Africa, India, and Australia - and these writings contain much of Twain's characteristic humor as well as a pointed critique of imperialism. "This is one more ingredient in the curious, amusing, instructive, and at times brilliant farrago, half anecdotes, one quarter diary, one-eighth quotations and the rest delicious footing, which Mark Twain after much pondering decided to call 'Following the Equator.'" (Contemporary New York Times review). Very Good. Seller Inventory # 2438

About this Item: Hartford The American Publishing Company 1897, 1897. An original salesman's dummy for the first edition of this popular work by Mark Twain With the title-page and frontispiece of the first edition, along with a nice selection of the many illustrations to be included in the book as well as a selection of the text and table of contents. There is also a prospectus and order form printed in red and black, these are followed by several lined pages for noting subscriber's names, addresses and binding choice. 8vo, the dummy is bound as the available cloth binding in the same blue material and with the upper cover central pictorial decoration of an elephant in India in gilt and four colours, the rear cover is an example of the cloth binding's gilt spine tooling. Attached to the inside front cover are spine examples for the two deluxe bindings; the Library Style and Half Turkey Morocco bindings. These are made of the leather's used for the deluxe bindings with the gilt spine tooling and lettering. A flyleaf printed in red explains the binding options. 50 ff. of text or plates; 4 pp. prospectus; 16 ff. customer order sheets. Quite well preserved, the blue cloth sturdy and unfaded, minor edge wear and some typical age, hinges a bit tender. some offsetting to the leaf explaining the bindings from the leather samples which remain in excellent condition, the text leaves all fine. Eleven lines of the first order sheet are filled in, the rest of the sheets unused. PRECEDING THE FIRST EDITION OF THIS POPULAR MARK TWAIN WORK, THIS IS THE SCARCE SALESMAN'S DUMMY USED TO TAKE ORDERS FOR THE COMING PUBLICATION., the autobiographical account of his tour through Australia, New Zealand and India. This dummy is an interesting look into Mark Twain's American Publishing Company's printing and book-selling techniques of the day, especially so in regard to the various binding styles, which could be pre-ordered to the buyer's taste. This particular seller's territory appears to have been in Newburyport, where we have our shop today. The street names all correspond to streets in the town. In fact, one of the buyers lived at 26 Pleasant Street, only a few steps away from our present day shop and offices. Seller Inventory # 29243

About this Item: Hartford The American Publishing Company 1897, 1897. First edition, First Issue, with the single line imprint and with signature "11" at bottom of page 161 as called for by BAL. With portrait frontispiece from a photograph of the author and 192 other illustrations by notable illustrators as A. B. Frost, Peter Newell and Dan Beard or from photographs. Large 8vo, publisher’s original blue cloth gilt decorated and lettered on the spine, the upper cover with a central pictorial decoration of an elephant in India in gilt and four colours. 712 pp. A fine and attractive copy, the blue cloth is bright, unfaded and unworn, just a touch of trivial shelving evidence, especially clean and fresh internally, one endpaper neatly tipped down along the hinge. THE FIRST ISSUE OF THE FIRST EDITION IN ORIGINAL CLOTH. Mark Twain’s autobiographical account of his tour through Australia, New Zealand and India. He gives wonderful account of his travels, the people met along the way, the sights seen, and with a zest and spirit unique to one of America’s greatest authors and humorists. Due to the massive text block, the book is seldom found in collector’s condition. The illustrations are extensive and vary in size and style and add immeasurably to making this an immensely readable narrative. Seller Inventory # 29115

About this Item: Harper & Brothers, Publishers, New York and London, 1925. Octavo, original cloth, frontispiece. Near fine in a very good dust jacket. Rare in the original dust jacket. Mark Twain toured the British Empire in 1895, during which time he began concocting a travelogue about the experience that was published in 1897. Twain's narrative spans the globe, from Australia to Hawaii. Full of tall-tales and real-life criticisms of imperialist arrogance, it is written with Twain's characteristic wit and enthusiasm for a good, entertaining story. Following the Equator was Twain's last travel book, and "also his most serious. He relates the narrative as himself. The serious tone in some ways makes this is best travel narrative" (MacDonnell, 53). Seller Inventory # 73027

About this Item: American Publishing Company, Hartford, 1897. 3/4 Leather. Condition: Near Fine. First Edition. 3/4 Contemporary Leather - this is not the "Publisher's Morocco" noted by Blanck, but may be, and probably is, an unrecorded leather binding for this issue. We've compared it to two other publisher's leather bindings (neither recorded by Blanck) for the first edition of Following the Equator and it is very similar though not a match, but we suspect there are others. There is a binder's ticket at rear (The Case Lockwood and Brainard Company, Hartford) . In any case, a lovely contemporary binding of the First Edition (Blanck 3451) with single publisher noted, "11" on page 161, etc. An unusually nice copy in morocco over marbled boards in a custom cloth slipcase with marbled sides. Slight shelfwear else fine. Size: 8vo - over 7¾" - 9¾" tall. Quantity Available: 1. Shipped Weight: 2 lbs 0 oz. Category: Fiction; Antiquarian & Rare; Inventory No: 033005. Seller Inventory # 033005

About this Item: 1897. A Journey around the World. Hartford: The American Publishing Company, 1897. Original blue cloth with front cover plate and gilt-decorated spine. First Edition, with the title page in the first and usual state (with no mention of McClure). This was Twain's travel narrative (beginning in Vancouver and ending in Cape Town, by way of Australia and India), illustrated by eleven artists of the day, with which he had "hoped to make good the tangled finances of the ill-fated publishing firm, Charles L. Webster & Company, of which Mark himself was the company" [Johnson]. It was Twain's last travel book, and it was also the last of his books to be sold on a subscription basis.~In this copy, the signature mark "11" is NOT present on page 161, as it is on most -- but this is not an issue point, as priority is unknown. This is an attractive, near-fine copy (the slightest of rubbing at the extremities, one inch of one endpaper cracked) -- housed in an attractive open-back cloth case with three title labels. Blanck 3451; Johnson pp 65-68. Seller Inventory # 13854

It was Twain's last travel book, and it was also the last of his books to be sold on a subscription basis.~As with most copies, the signature mark "11" is present on page 161 -- but this is not an issue point, as priority is unknown. This is an attractive, near-fine copy (some rubbing of the cover plate and at the extremities). Blanck 3451; Johnson pp 65-68. Seller Inventory # 13731

About this Item: American Publishing Company, Hartfored, 1897. Hardcover. Condition: Very Good. 1st Edition. 712 pages with photographic frontispiece of the author, numerous illustrations through out. Royal Octavo (9 1/4" x 6 1/4") bound in original publisher's blue cloth with colored pictorial vignette of an elephant in gilt on front cover, spine decorated and lettered in gilt, title lettered in green and black. Points title page Hartford imprint only, page 161 signature mark "11" present; flyleaf on back only (BAL 3451; Johnson 65; McBride 194) First edition, First state. This heavy tome was the result of Twain's famous lecture tour around the world in order to earn enough money to pay off the debts of his bankruptcy. His last travel book, it is also his most serious, and he relates the narrative as himself, with few of the stories, comic sketches and discursive passages that peppered his four earlier travel books. The serious tone in some ways makes this his best travel narrative. The English edition was published under the title More Tramps Abroad and contains thousands of words not included in this American text, as well as other differences on construction. This was the last of the subscription book Twain published and his last book to be published by the American Publishing Company. Condition: Spine ends and corners rubbed, small splits at spine heal, corners bumped, front inner hinge cracked. A very good copy. Seller Inventory # BOOKS001392
