About this Item: Charles Scribner's Sons, New York, 1940. Hardcover. Condition: Very Good. Dust Jacket Condition: No DJ. 1st Edition. A copy of the true first edition, of which there are many such without the DJ on the used book market, with Scribner's "A" on the copyright page and no seal. The pages are clean and unmarked, save for previous owner's name in pencil on half title page. Text block clean and tight. There is some browning on the endpapers. 471 pages. Binding in oatmeal boards, with black lettering on the red panels on the spine and the author's stamped facsimile signature on the front cover. {ref: Hanneman A18a}. The book shows moderate external wear, with light soiling to the covers. Slight bumping on the corners. Note to prospective buyers: There has been a debate in recent years over whether the Scribner's seal should also be present on the copyright page. Other Scribner's books published around the same time such as To Have and Have Not, The Yearling, The Dark Horse, The Last Tycoon, and Cross Creek all have both the "A" and the seal. However, no one has produced a copy of this novel with both the "A" and Scribner's seal, and no one has come forward to say they have even seen such a copy. So the jury is NOT out. However, editions with just the "A" are NOT scarce, although prices vary widely. Seller Inventory # 150409

About this Item: Scribner. Hardcover. Condition: Very Good. Dust Jacket Condition: Very Good. 1st Edition. New York: Scribner's, 1940. First edition. Based on Hemingway's own experiences, this book tells of Robert Jordan, an American who traveled to Spain to assist the struggle against the forces of the fascist Generalissimo Francisco Franco. Behind enemy lines with a guerrilla band, Jordan meets María - a young Spanish native whose life has been shattered by the outbreak of the war - and a great Hemingway love story ensues, entangled within the incredible brutality of civil war as Jordan seeks to complete his mission. A very good, first-state copy in tan cloth with black lettering on the spine's red tabs and with the author's signature reproduced on the front panel, with the Scribner "A" on the copyright page. There is darkening at the gutters and a previous owner's bookmark on the front pastedown but the book is square and tight. The dustwrapper is bright and very good, with a little edgewear and slight loss of material at the spine ends and scuffing to the rear panel. The photographer's name is missing from the portrait on the rear panel, indicating a true first edition. Seller Inventory # 009344
