Die deutsche Übersetzung stammt von Paul Baudisch und erschien 1941 im Verlag Bermann Fischer, Stockholm. Nach dem Zweiten Weltkrieg entwickelte sich das Buch auch im deutschsprachigen Raum zu einem Bestseller. Der Roman erzählt eine Episode von drei Tagen aus der Geschichte des US-amerikanischen Guerillakämpfers Robert Jordan im Spanischen Bürgerkrieg. Die Rahmenhandlung stellt der Auftrag an den Sprengstoffexperten Jordan dar, eine Brücke zeitgleich zum bevorstehenden Angriff der Republikaner auf die Stadt Segovia zu sprengen. Hinter den Linien der Feinde sucht Jordan die Zusammenarbeit mit der Guerillagruppe um Pablo. Pablos zögerlicher Einsatz für die Operation steht Jordans Pflichtgefühl entgegen. Weitere Spannungen werden durch Robert Jordans erwachende romantische Liebe zu María, einer Mitkämpferin Pablos, ausgelöst. Für den Titel des Romans verwendete Hemingway ein Zitat des englischen Dichters John Donne (1572–1631).
