About this Item: Macdonald & Co. Publishers Ltd, London, 1944. Leather Bound. Condition: As New. 1st Edition. First edition, first impression, sumptuously rebound in green half morocco, with gilt titling, black label and green cloth slipcase lined with old marbled paper. Looks absolutely wonderful, an ornament to any private library, although now hardly conforming to the 'Wartime Economy Standard'! 800pp. Abandoned pregnant and penniless on the teeming streets of London, 16 year old Amber St. Clare manages, by using her wits, beauty, and courage, to climb to the highest position a woman could achieve in Restoration England that of favorite mistress of the Merry Monarch, Charles II. From whores and highwaymen to courtiers and noblemen, from events such as the Great Plague and the Fire of London to the intimate passions of ordinary and extraordinary men and women, Amber experiences it all. But throughout her trials and escapades, she remains, in her heart, true to the one man she really loves, the one man she can never have. Frequently compared to 'Gone with the Wind', 'Forever Amber' is American author Kathleen Winsor's (1919-2003), great historical romance, outselling every other American novel of the 1940s despite being banned in Boston for its sheer sexiness. The film, directed by Otto Preminger and starring Linda Darnell and Cornel Wilde, was released 1947. Photos on request. Seller Inventory # 001294

About this Item: Macmillan, New York, 1944. Hardcover. Condition: Very Good. Dust Jacket Condition: Good. 1st Edition. FOREVER AMBER, by KATHLEEN WINSOR. Published by The Macmillan Company, New York, 1944. FIRST EDITION, FIRST PRINTING, with First Printing stated on the copyright page, the date 1944 on both the title and copyright page, and the $3.00 price on the dj front flap. HAND SIGNATURE of KATHLEEN WINSOR on a bookplate placed on the verso of the front free endpaper. Her SIGNED bookplate on the front free endpaper is directly across from her printed signature on the title page. It is quite attractive. Hardcover Book in Dustjacket, green cloth covered boards, gilt titling to the spine, map endpapers, 6x8.5 inches, 972 pages. VERY GOOD book, the covers have light pushing and slight wear to the spine ends, fading to the gilt titling on the spine, and the boards have rubbing to the corner tips; overall the covers are sturdy and attractive; internally, there is some curving to the front free endpaper caused by the Signed Kathleen Winsor bookplate, otherwise the inner pages are tight, bright, clean and unmarked. A solid, very nice book. In a GOOD PLUS dustjacket that is lightly sunned / faded at the spine, has edge and spine end wear, has a small tear / chip at the upper corner of the front flap fold; and has a few small scrapes; overall the dj remains bright and solid, the photo of Kathleen Winsor on the back panel is gorgeous, and the dj retains its original $3.00 price at the top of the front flap. SCARCE SIGNED FIRST PRINTING in a BRIGHT DUSTJACKET. About FOREVER AMBER (from Wikipedia): ******When it was published in 1944, Forever Amber was condemned it for its blatant sexual references. Fourteen US states banned the book as pornography. The first was Massachusetts, whose attorney general cited 70 references to sexual intercourse, 39 illegitimate pregnancies, 7 abortions, and 10 descriptions of women undressing in front of men, as reasons for banning the novel. The book was condemned by the Catholic Church for indecency. In 1945 the book was banned in Australia. The Minister for Customs, Senator Keane, said: The Almighty did not give people eyes to read that rubbish. Partly as a result of being banned and condemned Forever Amber was the BEST SELLING U.S. NOVEL of the 1940s. It sold over 100,000 copies in its first week of release, and went on to sell over three million copies. Within a month of its publication the movie rights had been purchased by Twentieth Century Fox. The film, Forever Amber, was directed by Otto Preminger and released ty 20th Century Fox in 1947. Forever Amber was responsible for popularizing Amber as a given name for girls.****** About KATHLEEN WINSOR (from Wikipedia): ****** Kathleen Winsor, b. 1919 d. 2003, was an American author. She is best known for her first work, the 1944 romantic novel Forever Amber. The novel, racy for its time, became a runaway bestseller even as it drew criticism from some authorities for its depictions of sexuality. Winsor wrote seven other novels, none of which matched the success of her debut.******. Signed by Author(s). Seller Inventory # 001899

About this Item: 1944. WINSOR, Kathleen. FOREVER AMBER. NY: The Macmillan Company, 1944. 8vo., green cloth in dust jacket; 972 pages. First Edition, first printing (so stated). Adapted into a successful 1948 movie, the 972-page novel was edited down to one-fifth of the manuscript Winsor originally presented to the publisher. Condemned for blatant sexual references, 14 states banned the book as pornography. Despite its ban, "Forever Amber" was the best-selling U.S. novel of the 1940s, selling more than 100,000 copies in its first week of release and eventually selling more than three million. Signed by Winsor on verso of the front endpaper. I have also noted two variant dust jackets but I have little information to offer about them. This dust jacket, which is uncommonly fragile, is entirely printed in blue- both text & the photograph on the rear cover. It is my experience that this is the more uncommon dust jacket but, if it is the earliest one, I do not know. Very Good (little wear covers; contents clean & tight); some wear & chipping (one-inch chip base of spine; $3.00 price is present but lower corner of front flap is clipped) d/j. $750.00.
