About this Item: BOBBS MERRILL CO, 1943. Hardcover. Condition: Good+. no jacket. Hardcover Bobbs-Merrill, New York, 1943 754 pages. Early printing with all 1st edition points present.Good+ but lacking the DJ. Moderate shelf/edge wear to blue cloth boards with gilt titles-corners bumped. Gilt titles are worn and front cover has a few small spots. No previous owner marks-all pages are bright, clean and crisp. Textblock has a few small stains that do not even get near the text. Brilliant and arguably the century's most challenging novel of ideas, when first published it created a huge public furor and global interest in the author-touches on a number of universal themes: the strength and character of the creative artist who won't sell out, the battle between good and evil, the ever present threat of fascism and socialism, whether overt or hidden. More relevant today than when it was written. A good early printing reading copy that will last a few more generations unlike a paperback. LOC SSE-02. Seller Inventory # 140429006

About this Item: The Bobbs-Merrill Company, Inc., 1943. Hard Cover. Condition: Good. No Jacket. Reprint. Early reprint. Boards stained, top page margin lightly stained, spine toned, ink name on front endpaper, light spot in center of front blanks. 1943 Hard Cover. We have more books available by this author. 753, [1] pp. 8vo. Blue cloth, gilt titles. When The Fountainhead was first published, Ayn Rand's daringly original literary vision and her groundbreaking philosophy, Objectivism, won immediate worldwide interest and acclaim. This instant classic is the story of an intransigent young architect, his violent battle against conventional standards, and his explosive love affair with a beautiful woman who struggles to defeat him. As fresh today as it was then, here is a novel about a hero--and about those who try to destroy him. The Fountainhead is a 1943 novel by Ayn Rand. It was Rand's first major literary success and its royalties and movie rights brought her fame and financial security. The book's title is a reference to Rand's statement that 'man's ego is the fountainhead of human progress'. The Fountainhead's protagonist, Howard Roark, is an idealistic young architect who chooses to struggle in obscurity rather than compromise his artistic and personal vision. The book follows his battle to practice modern architecture, which he believes to be superior, despite an establishment centered on tradition-worship. How others in the novel relate to Roark demonstrate Rand's various archetypes of human character, all of which are variants between Roark, her ideal man of independent-mindedness and integrity, and what she described as the 'second-handers.' The complex relationships between Roark and the various kinds of individuals who assist or hinder his progress, or both, allows the novel to be at once a romantic drama and a philosophical work. The manuscript was rejected by twelve publishers before a young editor, Archibald Ogden, at the Bobbs-Merrill Company publishing house wired to the head office, 'If this is not the book for you, then I am not the editor for you.' Despite generally negative early reviews from the contemporary media, the book gained a following by word of mouth and sold hundreds of thousands of copies. The Fountainhead was made into a Hollywood film in 1949, with Gary Cooper in the lead role of Howard Roark, and with a screenplay by Ayn Rand herself. Seller Inventory # 2105701
