About this Item: Country Life. London. 1929 1st edition. 4to (188 x 256mm). Ppxii,84. B/w plates by G.D. Armour. 'Foxiana' monogram stamped in black to red cloth, spine titled in black. * Large cup (bowl) ring and fading to slightly bowed boards, some foxing internally. Good, lacks dust-wrapper. "Isaac Bell is one of the best-known personalities in the hunting world, and in his knowledge of fox-hound breeding has every claim to rank with the late Lord Lonsdale and the late Lord Bathurst. In experience in hunting hounds in the field he has like claims to high place amongst amateur huntsmen, and, indeed, it might be added, the professionals, for he has been a master, carrying the horn of three famous packs - the Galway Blazers, the Kilkenny, and the South and West Wilts - and, as an undergraduate, whipped into the Cambridge Drag." Publisher's blurb from A Huntsman's Log-Book. Foxiana was Isaac Bell's first book, and is a good collection of advice and anecdote for the amusement and instruction of the keen hunt servant, hunt follower, and armchair horse and hound enthusiast. Fifteen good sketches of Bell's pack in action, by G.D. Armour. Chapters include: A hunting day; A genius; Luck; Solving a riddle; Kennel dialogue; Coin and kind; Meditations of Mr. Blowhard; Three sportsmen of the Mendips; Told by the kennel horse; Lost or killed?; The favourite; Comic hounds; Harkaway's yarn; You on the chestnut 'oss; Retrospection; Misunderstood; A man in grey; The scapegoat; The biter bit; Cyrano; La nuit porte conseil; A.D. 3000; The foxhound's prayer. * Two bindings are known. This is Binding B, the second issue. The first issue has red cloth with brown buckram spine titled in gilt, and "Foxiana" as if a signature, to the upper right-hand corner of the front board. This later issue, in Binding B, has full red cloth, spine titled in black and "Foxiana" stamped in black to the upper right-hand corner. The first issue is dated on the title-page verso, stating, "First Published in 1929." The second issue has no such declaration on the title-page verso, but does have "1929" on the title-page, inserted above "London, Country Life Ltd." We have seen a copy of the first issue with a gift inscription from Christmas 1929. Seller Inventory # 40531
