About this Item: Giovanni. Battista Hacque/ Hacque, Johann Baptist Circa 1670-1674, Wien / Vienna, 1670. No Binding. Condition: Very Good. 1st Edition. Original Engraving, Circa 1663, Signed "Bianchi Scul." And "Cesare Fiori A Delin."; Possibly Pietro Bianci (-1690), The Painter, Or Another Bianci Active In The Early 18Th Century. Apparently A Leaf From A Collection Of Portraits. Part Of A Large Collection Of Original Antique Engravings Formed By A Southern California Artist In The Early To Middle Twentieth Century. Each Plate Has Small Glue Marks On Reverse Where They Were Tipped In To An Album. Luis Francisco De Benavides Carrillo De Toledo, Marquis Of Caracena, Marquis Of Fromista ( 1608 In Valencia ¿ 1668 In Madrid) Was A Spanish General And Political Figure. Raised In A Noble Spanish Family, He Made A Career In The Army During The Many Battles In Italy And Flanders Between 1629 And 1659. He Conquered The Fortress Of Casale Monferrato In 1652. He Was Governor Of Milan Between 1648 And 1656. After The Defeat Of John Of Austria The Younger In The Battle Of The Dunes (1658), Caracena Was Appointed To Succeed Him As Governor Of The Hapsburg Netherlands Between 1659 And 1664. After The Conclusion Of The Treaty Of The Pyrenees, The Hapsburg Netherlands Saw A Period Of Relative Peace. Despite This Fact, Governing Wasn't Easy For Caracena, Since By Then Various Wars Had Pushed Spain To The Brink Of Bankruptcy. In 1664 He Returned To Spain To Assume Command Of The War Against Portugal, Which Was Going Poorly After A Series Of Military Setbacks, Most Recently After The Defeat In 1663 In The Battle Of Ameixial, Near Estremoz Of The Same John Of Austria The Younger. Caracena's Command Of The Spanish Forces In Portugal Was Brief; He Was Decisively Defeated By António Luís De Meneses At The Battle Of Montes Claros In 1665. The Defeat Effectively Ended The War Of Restoration In Favor Of The Portuguese. After The Battle, Caracena Was Charged With Treason And Cowardice. He Defended Himself By Claiming That He Was Not To Blame, But Rather The Defeat Was Due To The Poor State Of The Spanish Army, Intrigue In The Spanish Court, And The Lack Of Funds To Protract A War Against Portugal. Afterwards, He Was Disregarded By The Spanish Crown And Died Of Disease In 1668. Seller Inventory # 037894

About this Item: Imprenta de Ivan Pablo Marti, por Francisco Barnola Impressor, Barcelona, 1701. First edition. 14 lvs, [1]-10, 9-38, 1 lv., [2] pp., 39-268, 257-476 pp. Numerous errors in pagination. A heroic poem on the discovery of America by Columbus and the Spanish conquests - influenced most likely by Bacon's view of conquest as philosophical, rather than just military- written in Spanish by the Portuguese born writer Francisco Botello de Moraes (1670-1747) who lived most of his life in Spain and Italy. Composed in his youth and never completed, with gaps left blank at a number of stanzas (libro i, stanza 78-107; ii. 60-80 ; iii. 103-143; vi. 88-228; vii. 54-73, 87-128, 157-176; viii. 17-77, 102-301, 311-363; ix, 1-200, 222-262, 281-381, 383-449, 502-522; x. 134-162, 198-298). For an excellent discussion of Botello de Moraes see See Ruth Hill: Sceptres and Sciences in the Spains: four humanists and the new philosophy, pp. 191-244. Provenance: Ex Libris José M. Rodriguez MCMXXXVIII/ Bibliotheca Chizigonana on front pastedown. Palau 33684. Sabin 6797. Medina, BHA 2027. Leclerc 75. Ticknor p.42. Inncencio II: 642. Boards soiled, hinges and small tears neatly repaired, owner's bookplate on front pastedown, corner chip to front endpaper, later inscription on verso of half-title, occasional browning, overall a very good copy. About this Item: [PRIMERA EDICION].- Impresso en Madrid: por Pedro Tazo, año de 1624.- [12 h.], 108 folios, [4 h.], 146 folios [del 57 al 60 están manuscritos con clara y buena caligrafía de principios del siglo XVIII], [8 h.]: Portada bellamente grabada firmada por Juo. Schorquens, Faciebat. Seller Inventory # 37999
