Ein Beitrag zur Axiomatik der Abelschen Gruppen.: TARSKI, Alfred

About this Item: No Binding. Condition: Good. Offprint, 4 pages, of which the outer two rather dusty, still a good copy. First edition of Tarski's short work on the axiomatisation of commutative groups (also known as Abelian groups, named after Niels Henrik Abel). 'For commutative groups the first alternate axioms were found by Alfred Tarski in 1938; the second by William McCune (using automated theorem proving) in 1992. In this case it is known that no shorter axioms are possible' (Stephen Wolfram, A New Kind of Science, p. 1153). Seller Inventory # ABE-13375347653

About this Item: Soft cover. Condition: Fine. PRESENTATION COPY of the first edition from the author, inscribed on upper wrapper 'Wraz z serdecrnewi / pozdrowieniami / A Tarski'. Offprint, original stapled blue printed wrappers, slight fading and a few small nicks at outer edges, partly unopened, a fine copy. 'Before Tarski came to the United States in 1939, he had written a series of papers on both the axiomatic and the strctural aspects of Boolean alebras, and his inclination to algebraize mathematical problems is well illustrated by his paper 'Algebraische Fassung des Massproblems'. Many of his later investigations of various types of algebraic structures are inspired by work done in this earlier period' (Bjarni Jonsson, 'The Contributions of Alfred Tarski to General Algebra' in The Journal of Symbolic Logic, 51, 4, 1986). About this Item: No Binding. Condition: Very Good. Sewn offprint without wrappers, slight damage to paper backstrip, uniform light browning, untrimmed and mostly unopened, library sticker and AUTHOR'S PRESENTATION INSCRIPTION inscription 'Szanownemu Panu Dr. Leonowi Chwistkowi od autora' on upper margin of first page. First edition. 'In 1924 Tarski published [this] first systematic development of a theory of finite sets, based on Zermelo's axioms, but with the negation of the axiom of infinity and no axiom of choice. Dedekind and Hausdorff had envisaged such a project, but Tarski was the first to realize it completely. The eminent French mathematician Denjoy later incorporated substantial portions of the paper into one of his books' (Givent, ibid., p. 49). This copy's presentee, Leon Chwistek (1884-1944) was an avant-garde painter as well as a logician. According to Bertrand Russell, he was one of only six people on the planet (three of whom were Poles) who had read and understood all of Principia Mathematica. In 1928 Chwistek and Tarski found themselves rivals for a newly-created professorship at Lvov University, in what turned out to be a rather messy competition. Outside opinions were canvassed, including that of Russell, who wrote: 'The work of Mr. Tarski I do not at the moment remember and do not have access to at present. In these circumstances I can only say that in choosing Dr. Chwistek you will be choosing a man who will do you credit, but I am not in a position to compare his merits with those of Mr. Tarski'. 'The decision was made in 1930: the job went to Chwistek. Twardowski was much offended, as were the other philosophers because, in their view, Tarski was far and away the superior candidate. The residue of personal rancour lasted, and as a result logic did not bring the mathematicians and philosophers of Lvov together in a unified circle as it had in Warsaw. Nevertheless, relations between Chwistek and Tarski remained good' (A.B. & S. Feferman, Alfred Tarski: Life and Logic, Cambridge, 2004, p. 67). Inscribed by Author(s). About this Item: Soft cover. Condition: Good. Exceedingly rare PRESENTATION OFFPRINT of the first edition of an early paper in set theory by one of the great quadrumvirate in the history of logic (with Aristotle, Frege and Gödel), and ONE OF ONLY TWO WORKS PUBLISHED UNDER 'BOTH' THE AUTHOR'S SURNAMES. Born Alfred Tajtelbaum, he changed his name officially on 19 May 1924, after which all his publications were by 'Alfred Tarski'. In this paper he demonstrated that seven well-known propositions in cardinal arithmetic whose proofs use the Axiom of Choice are actually equivalent to that axiom. (See Steven Givant, 'Unifying threads in Alfred Tarski's work', The Mathematical Intelligencer, 21:1, Springer, 1999). This copy's presentee, Stanislaw Zaremba (1863-1942), was elected first president of the Mathematical Society of Krakow on its inception in 1919. The society became the Polish Mathematical Society in 1920. In the same year the journal Fundamenta Mathematicae (from which this paper is extracted) was founded in Warsaw. Devoted to topology, set theory, and foundations of mathematics, it was the first specialised journal in the history of mathematics. The early volumes were filled mainly with the work of Polish mathematicians. PHYSICAL DESCRIPTION: Offprint, 4 leaves, original staples, margins wide and untrimmed, fragile at edges and with tears not affecting text, uniformly browned, author's presentation inscription 'Szanownemu Panu Profesorowi Stanislawowi Zarembie od autora' on upper margin of first page. Inscribed by Author(s). Seller Inventory # ABE-15358570036
