About this Item: Ioa. Mariam Scotum, ma J. Wolf, Napoli, ma Londra, 1591. Full Vellum. Condition: Good. Dust Jacket Condition: Good. Size: in-quarto (187 mm x 140 mm). Seller Inventory # 000011

About this Item: Ioa. Mariam Scotum, but J. Wolf, Napoli, but Londra, 1591. Full Vellum. Condition: Good. Dust Jacket Condition: Fine. Napoli (but Londra) (1563 but 1591) - Ioa. Mariam Scotum (but J. Wolf). 1 blank leaf (not contemporary), 10 not numbered leaves, 228 pages, 1 not numbered leaf (with three volvells still to be cut), 1 blank leaf (not contemporary). Simple title page with a grotesque in the center. Thera are a lot of woodcuts representing tables, strange symbols, coded messages, tools to be used for the cryptography (these ones shall be used with the relevant volvells to be cut from the last page of the book). Full vellum modern binding with handwritten title on the spine. Title page with some repairs. A small lack of paper at the top of page 7 has been repaired with loss of some letters (see photo); tear restored at page 39, last sheet reinforced. Few small other repairs/reinforcement here and there (e.g. last sheet with volvells). In general, a very good copy. Very scarce counterfeit printed by John Wolfe of the first edition (Naples (Italy), 1563); second edition in absolute. Cryptography is a technique used to render incomprehensible to people not authorized to read it. Cryptography doesn't hide a message, but its meaning. The distortion of the message is carried out using a method agreed between the writer and people authorized to read it. By inverting the process, it comes out the original message. There exists two editions of this treatise printed in 1591: the present one, practically Identical to that one printed in Naple in 1563, and another one with correct place and date (Londini, apud Iohannem Wolphium) and with another dedication. This version was presented to the Frankfurt fair held in 1591; it was printed on paper whose quality is better than the one usually utilized in England. We point out that THIS EDITION IS SCARCEST THAN THE OTHER TWO! The "De ziferis" is famous, in particular, for the "tavola" that uses 11 alphabets and the "literal worm". Giovanni Battista della Porta (Vico Equense, 1535 - Napoli, 1615) was born from a noble family and devoted himself to the study of languages and philosophy. When he was only 18 years old, he published his first work: the la "Magiæ naturalis", that gave rise to him some problem: that Pope Paolo III intervened in order to save him from the accusation of magic. He founded a scientific circle (the Accademia Secretorum Naturae) and contributed to the foundation, in Naples, of the Accademia dei Lincei and of Accademia degli Oziosi. As well as the "Magiæ naturalis" (1558), his most important works are: "De distillatione" (1608), "De furtivis literarum notis, vulgo de ziferis libri 4" (1563), "Phytognomonica" (1588). Size: in-quarto (187 mm x 140 mm). Seller Inventory # 000012
