About this Item: Printed For J. Dodsley, In Pall Mall, London, 1774 First Edition Thus., 1774. First published in Italian in 1558. First English edition 1576. This edition translated by Richard Graves. 8vo. pp. xxiii, [i], 192. Contemporary full brown calf red leather label lettered gilt on spine. Marbled endpapers. Bookplate of Wilfrid J. W. Blunt. Ownership inscription: 'W. J. W. B. Jan 1936 Richmond'. One page of notes at rear written by Wilfrid Jasper Walter Blunt, some pencil lines to margins of text and one annotation probably by him. Wilfrid Jasper Walter Blunt (1901 – 1987) grandnephew of Wilfrid Scawen Blunt, was an art teacher, author, artist and curator of the Watts Gallery at Compton, Surrey. He was brother of art expert and spy Anthony Blunt. Giovanni de la Casa (1503 – 1556), poet, archbishop and clerk of the Chamber to Pope Paul III, wrote his influential book on how to conduct oneself in Renaissance Italy in 1558. He gives frank advice on etiquette, covering a wide range of topics from fashion to conversation. The following is an example of what is considered 'extremely indecent': 'when you have blown your nose, to draw aside and examine the contents of your handkerchief; as if you expected pearls or rubies to distil from your brain'. Joints somewhat worn but still just about holding , covers rubbed with slight loss at foot of spine Some wear to covers, some splitting at spine hinges and rubbing otherwise used vg minus. About this Item: London: Privately Printed. 1892., 1892. Small 4to. 220 x 180 mm. pp. xi + 122. All edges uncut. Limited edition of one hundred ordinary and thirty large paper copies, of which twenty four were for sale. This copy is no. 2, of the large paper edition, printed on hand- made paper and numbered and signed by Herbert J. Reid. Stiff paper boards with a wrap-around limp printed cover. “Giovanni della Casa was born near Florence in 1503. He studied in Florence, Bologna and Rome. In Padua he befriended Bembo in 1527 and in 1529 he returned to Rome. His ecclesiastical career started in 1537 and he was ambassador in Venice from 1544 to 1549. He wrote two famous orations: one to convince Venetians to ally against Carlo V, and the other to induce the emperor to hand Piacenza back to the pontiff state. During the papal rule of Giulio III, he went to live in the Trevigiano area (1553-55). Following the election of Paolo IV, he returned to Rome where he was secretary of state. He died in Rome in 1556. He wrote “Galateo”, at the request of Galeazzo Florimonte, from whose name the title was taken. The author aimed at writing a handbook, based on a moral order, to provide standards for social behaviour in everyday living.” Paper cover slightly dust- marked, contents mint. About this Item: London printed for Bernard Lintott. and sold by Francis Faucit, 1703. 8vo, pp. [xvi], 149, [3] advertisements; a fine copy in contemporary panelled calf. Apparently the first edition of this translation of the Galateo of Giovanni della Casa (1503-56). It seems that every generation rediscovered the necessity of polite conversation and commissioned a new version. In fact there had been another translation by the lexicographer Robert Ainsworth, published only a couple of years before this one, which is different from this. The present version is wrongly attributed in ESTC to Robert Peterson, who was in fact the Tudor translator (his edition appeared in 1576). Seller Inventory # 21116
