About this Item: Penguin, London, UK, 1989. Paperback. Condition: NEAR FINE. First Edition, 27th Printing. Text/NEW w/trace margin discoloration. Soft cover/NF w/light wear & sticker removal loss to lower back corner. Collection of 15 short stories of early 20th century New Zealand from Katherine Mansfield, pseudonym of Kathleen Mansfield Beauchamp (1888-1923). First published 1922 in literary magazines; this is Penguin reissue. The physical setting for the stories is loosely based upon Mansfield’s childhood home in Wellington and carries autobiographical undertones. "The Garden Party", the title story, centers on an annual, ritual and elaborate garden party held by the well-to-do Sheridan family. On the same day, news arrives of the accidental horse-and-cart death of a working-class man of the poorer part of the village. Told through young Laura Sheridan's reaction to the day. She had so looked forward to the party, but when her family at large simply brushed off the tradgey by deciding the unfortunate man was drunk, leads her questioning class prejudices and absurdity of class distinctions. About this Item: Constable, 1922. Hardcover. Condition: Very Good. No Jacket. 1st Edition. blue cloth with orange lettering and orange borders , some silverfishing to spine but does not obscure any of the lettering and is not a major distraction. the hinges are beginning but binding is still very tight; foxing on front and back fly pages, edgewear is minor. a small crease on front near top right corner. previous owner has made some penciled notations on the copyright page that seem to indicate that this was a review copy and that the notes are those notes of the reviewer: Here are some of the comments: " The author throws a Cooper-Hewitt lamp glare on her characters, who whatever the sex are one and all femimine. one feels a lack of sympathy only somewhat less than Hergesheimer's cruel justice, almost without mercy . selective realism ; much better use of material and language than Sherwood Anderson; at times one thinks of Sorolla of Bastida, but more often of the impressionists. By American standards, not a short story in the book. Each story is graded on table of contents page with either no grade, good or very good. and at the beginning of each short stort there again are penciled notes usually only a sentence or two. Not normally are pencilled notations in a book a plus but in this case they could be extremely collectible if the book could be matched to an actual review of what appears to be a first printing "as stated) and has the typos on page 103 and the others as well. Very good plus copy otherwise. Seller Inventory # tgp12212007
