About this Item: Toronto. The Hunter, Rose Co. 1899., 1899. Sm4to. 25cm, The First Edition, in 2 volumes, xxxvi,18-1196 & xxiv,-17)-978pp., several hundred plates and illustrations, in the original maroon cloth, gilt spine titles and gilt crests & titles on the upper cover, in fine sound condition, we have only had this set twice previously, very scarce. (cdn) This is the First Edition of 1899. There was another issue in 1900. We have only had this set twice previously, both were the second issue. A monumental compendium of the history of Freemasonry in Canada from documentary sources by a noted Canadian historian and past Grand Master of the Grand Lodge of Canada. Robertson was educated at Upper Canada College, and early on entered journalism. In 1866 he founded the Daily Telegraph (1866-71) in Toronto; and in 1876 he founded the Evening Telegram. The success of this paper laid the foundation of a large fortune, and enabled its proprietor to indulge his passion for philanthropy and for historical collections. He was the founder and benefactor of the Hospital for Sick Children, Toronto; and the John Ross Robertson collection of Canadian historical pictures in the Toronto Public Library was his‘ creation. From 1896 to 1900 he sat in the Dominion House of Commons for East Toronto; and he rose to high rank in the Masonic order. He wrote The History of Freemasonry in Canada (2 vols., Toronto, 1900); and he published Robertson's Landmarks of Toronto (6 vols., Toronto, 1894-1914), and The Diary of Mrs. John Graves Simcoe (Toronto, 1912). In 1914 he was elected a fellow of the Royal Society of Canada; and he died in Toronto on May 30, 1918. - Wallace. DCB. Macmillan. 4th edition, 1978. Seller Inventory # 37378
