Very good First published in 1804, this book was part of an ambitious series cataloguing the agricultural features of every county in Britain and Ireland, beginning in the 1790's. Their overall findings contributed to the increased pace of Enclosure in the early nineteenth century, which in turn swelled the urban population, aiding the progress of the Industrial Revolution.

First Edition, variant issue. One of the 'county surveys' compiled by Young following his appointment as secretary in 1793 to Pitt's newly created Board of Agriculture. One of the most prolific of England's agricultural writers, Young produced a staggering sum of some two hundred and fifty volumes. He pioneered the application of statistical method to the study of all phases of agricultural production and costs of production, gathering the information for his investigations and gaining first-hand experience through extensive tours conducted in England, Ireland and France. First edition, published in the great series initiated by the Board of Agriculture from 1793, of which Young was secretary. Young's account of Hertfordshire is generally recognized to be one of the best in the series. Very good copy with the bookplate of Robert Clutterbuck (1772-1831), author of The History and Antiquities of the County of Hertford (1815-27). Half-title lacking.
