First edition of this translation, copy 190 of 250 copies, xvi, 167 pp., 27 maps from Donnus Nicolaus Germanus mid-15th century manuscript of Ptolemy's "Geographia" (Codex Eberianus) plus the Ruysch Map from the 1508 printing of "Geographia" and the New World Map from the 1522 printing on unnumbered pages on stubs, 42 x 29.5 cm., original ¾ calf and tan cloth with five raised bands and gilt lettering, minor rubbing to leather but fine. Printed on Charing handmade paper. Designed by John Archer. Collotypes by Max Jafeé. There are also other illustrations throughout the text Introduction by Professor Joseph Fischer, S. J. This is the first English translation of "Geography". This volume covers eight books of Ptolemy's 'Geographia' which was a compilation of what was known about the world's geography in the Roman Empire during his time (ca 100-168 CE). He relied on the work of others, in particular an early geographer, Marinos of Tyre, and on gazetteers of the Roman and ancient Persian Empire. He was a Roman citizen of Egypt who wrote in Greek. He was a mathematician, astronomer, geographer, astrologer, and poet (of a single epigram in the Greek Anthology). He lived in Egypt under Roman rule, and is believed to have been born in the town of Ptolemais Hermiou in the Thebaid. He died in Alexandria. Seller Inventory # 000185

Ptolemy's 'Geographia' was a compilation of what was known about the world's geography in the Roman Empire during his time (ca 90-168 ad). Limited 1st. edition (no. 180 of 250) on hand-made paper. Dark tan half leather with light tan cloth boards; five raised bands and gilt details on spine. Original protective paper still on the back cover and the whole in original cardboard box with label on the front. The box lid has a detached end flap. The book is as new. Elephant folio 17 x 12 inches This volume is a translation of the seven books of the Geographia. 27 maps are from a copy of the manuscript by Donnus Nicolaus Germanus--the Codex Ebnerianus, plus the 1508 Ruysch map and the New World map from the 1522 edition. Introduction by Joseph Fischer of Stella Matutina College in Austria. Stevenson was a scholar of the geography, cartography and history of the New World and a professor at Rutgers.
