About this Item: Naval Institute Press, Annapolis; (1992). First American Edition. Thick Quarto. 416pp., with an introduction by Norman Friedman, illustrated with plans and photographic images. During the first World War, when the standard reference yearbooks were heavily censored, the allied navies depended on a series of "Confidential Books" compiled, issued and regularly updated by British Naval Intelligences. Divided into individual parts, each devoted to a particular type of warship, they summarized under standard headings the essential features of each ship or class. These confidentials covered many areas that were often ignored; structural details, internal communications, searchlights, bridge equipment, a complete list of the characteristics of ship's boats and so on. Never previously made publicly available, all the sections relating to ships have been brought together for the first time. Bound in black cloth, spine lettering gilt A fine copy in fine pictorial dust jacket. While this book was printed and bound in Britain, it was authorized for sale only in the US. About this Item: 1st.ed., thus, Greenhill Books, 1992. 416 pp., profusely illustrated with photographs, plans & silhouettes. D.j., 30 x 22cm. FINE. Never previously made publicly available, this is a facsimile of the Royal Navy’s Confidential Book on the ships of the Imperial German Navy, published during the First World War by British Naval Intelligence at a time when the standard reference yearbooks like ‘Jane’s’ and ‘Brassey’s’ were heavily censored. The Allied navies depended on these books that were regularly updated by the Admiralty, as the data supplied was the most reliable and covered many areas not to be found in the standard annual reference works, including structural details, internal communications, searchlights, bridge equipment, characteristics of ship’s boats, etc. Illustrations include silhouettes for recognition purposes, profile and deck arrangement plans stressing armour and armament distribution ; and photographs of completed ships and artist’s impressions (by Dr. Oscar Parkes) of those building. Invaluable comment and analysis supports the data, enabling naval officers of the day to gauge the strengths and weaknesses of the enemy. Uses the revised late-war editions in order to provide maximum information for the reader, historian and model-maker. Seller Inventory # C148B077
