In 4° (26,5x20,5 cm); tre tomi: (8), VIII, 427, (1), (2 b.) pp., (10), 484, (2), (2 b.) pp., (10), 512, (2), (2 b.) pp. Primi tre tomi di opera in quattro tomi, l'ultimo tomo uscì però, quasi trent'anni dopo l'uscita del terzo volume, nel 1759. Una nuova serie di volumi curata da Ginesio Grimaldi, fratello Gregorio, andò ad integrare l'opera negli anni seguenti arrivando a creare un'opera in dodici volumi. Tutti i volumi dell'opera sono rari a reperirsi. Ogni volume è una monografia a se stante che analizza un determinato periodo storico. Legature coeve in cartoncino d'attesa, qualche difetto ai dorsi (in parte lacunoso quello del primo volume ma volume solido e ben legato). Un leggero alone alle prime 6 carte e qualche leggerissima brunitura nel primo volume, Un piccolo tunnel di tarlo al margine interno bianco, delle prime 10 carte e nel margine alto, delle ultime 30 carte, del tutto ininfluenti, del secondo volume che presenta un leggero foxing sparso nelle pagine dovuto alla qualità delle carte. Il terzo volume presenta una leggera brunitura diffusa, dovuta alla qualità napoletana della carta utilizzata. Per il resto, nel complesso, esemplare in buone condizioni di conservazione e raro a reperirsi, ancora in barbe. I volumi rappresentano l'opera più importante del celebre giurista nato a Napoli l'8 maggio del 1694 (morì a Marsala nel 1767). Figlio di uno dei principali esponenti del mondo intellettuale napoletano, amico di Piero Giannone (con il quale ebbe una diatriba proprio per l'opera del figlio) e di Ludovico Antonio Muratori, vide la sua vita orientata dagli insegnamenti paterni che fin dalla giovanissima età, lo aveva introdotto non solo, allo studio della storia del diritto feudale e municipale del Regno ma anche ad una visione estremamente moderna, degli studi storiografici. Non è un caso che Gregorio ebbe come insegnante, scelto dallo stesso padre, il grande Giambattista Vico per l'istruzione storica, filosofica e letteraria, mentre a Pietro Contegna spettò di impartirgli gli insegnamenti di diritto. Giurista di grande fama, fu uno dei più celebri del suo tempo, nonostante l'ingombrante presenza del padre, giurista a sua volta di grande caratura. All'uscita del primo volume dell'opera "In città corse la "congettura non mal fondata" che l'idea e il piano dell'opera fossero di Costantino: Giustiniani (p. 145) ne aveva conferma dal proprio padre, al quale Ginesio lo "avea ingenuamente ben mille volte confessato". L'intento ispiratore dell'iniziativa era di riscrivere la Istoria giannoniana espungendone i "veleni" e rafforzandone gli aspetti giuridici ed eruditi. Rispetto al modello risultano infatti più dettagliate le parti dedicate al diritto romano (t. I, libro I) e al diritto feudale (t. I, libro IV), mentre gli elementi di critica storica furono sottoposti alle correzioni di Matteo Egizio. Nel corso della revisione Egizio ritenne di aver scoperto numerosi errori di Giannone e fornì il materiale a Sebastiano Paoli, che lo riversò nelle anonime Annotazioni critiche sopra il nono libro del tomo II dell'Istoria civile, Lucca (ma Napoli) 1731" Treccani.
