About this Item: E. Allen, London, 1893. Hardcover. Condition: Good. First Edition. Crown 4to; xv & 724 pages; The stated number of illustrations is: " 52 plates, 6 of which are coloured paintings, each finished by hand"; The actual number is quite confusing: there are no plates called for that are actually numbered 33 and 36, and plates 46 and 47 are actaully numbered Diagram A1 and Diagram A2; there are also an additional 5 plates, four of which are described as Diagrams, and two of these are coloured, as well as the 6 mentioned on the title-page, making a total of 57 illustrations; hardback: original dark blue cloth, with title and decoration in gilt on front cover and spine, top edge gilt, others untrimmed; the covers are rather rubbed and stained, with wear to edges and corners, but sound; internally the front inner joint is split, but partially holding on the webbing, and the prelims are a little loose at the bottom; the untrimmed page edges are are little frayed, and are browned and have foxing, but the contents are otherwise clean and sound, and the main text block is strong. Overall a good copy of this extremely scarce work on Spiritualism and Psychic Photography. The work is actually by Sarah Power, a Birmingham amateur, also known as Thomas Slaney Wilmot, who describes the attempts of the deceased T.S.W. to contact her ( his fiancee) from the spirit world, and to advise her in the art of psychic photography. The first part consists of descriptions of 36 seances, and this is followed by a chapter on astrology, and then descriptions of experiments in psychic photography, with illustrations. Then follow sections on Planetary Angels, Fragments from Various Sources, Psychic Science Lectures, and other experiments. A most extraordinary and fascinating book, which pre-dates her book "Twenty Photographs of the Risen dead" by a year. Seller Inventory # 005327

Two signed portraits of Elbert and Alice Hubbard. 8vo. [199 x 149 x 15 mm]. 107, [2] pp. Contemporary binding of half reddish-pink goatskin, marbled paper sides. The spine divided into six panels, lettered in the first and the second with small leaves and dots, the other panels with rows of leaves and dots, marbled endleaves, top edge gilt, the others untrimmed. It is No.15 of 106 copies printed on genuine Japan vellum and signed by Elbert Hubbard. Elbert Green Hubbard (1856-1915) was a successful soap salesman for J.D. Larkin & Co. in Buffalo, whose life was changed on a visit to England and a meeting with William Morris. Returning to the States, he wrote of his travels and set up a press, the Roycroft, in emulation of the Kelmscott Press. In 1895 he founded a community, the Roycrofters, at East Aurora. Besides printing a long list of titles, they also operated a fine bindery, a furniture shop and shops producing modelled leather and hammered copper goods. In 1904 Hubbard married Alice Moore, a school teacher and noted feminist. In 1915 the two of them went down on the Lusitania. Seller Inventory # ebc3101
