About this Item: Londini excudebat Tho. Braddyll & prostant apud Georg. Pawlett & Guil. Freeman., 1687. Folio (348 x 222mm), pp. [xxii], 576; with a fine large portrait of the author by R. White opposite the dedication; title page in red and black; a very good copy in contemporary vellum over pasteboard, probably Dutch; with morocco label (upper free endpaper replaced). Bookplate of the Rev. John L. Moilliet of Abberley Rectory (Worcs), dated 1865; more recently in Dorset County Library, with bookplate. Third edition. The Glossarium was first published in 1626, but the first part (A-L) only, and then completed in 1664, long after Spelman's death by his protégé William Dugdale, from the papers Spelman left him, on behalf of his nephew Charles Spelman. This was an important glossary of obsolete Latin and English terms, mostly legal but in fact encompassing a wide range of subjects from archaeology to government posts. It was the greatest achievement of Sir Henry Spelman: in his early studies, he had so much difficulty assigning the proper meanings to Anglo-Saxon and Latin terms that he found it necessary to begin by defining the vocabulary of the original documents, and sample sheets were submitted to foreign scholars in 1619. The importance of the work was immediately recognised, both in England and on the continent. Following Dugdale's completion of the book, this edition has been revised again: notable features are a new and splendid portrait of Spelman by R. White, based on the image by Cornelius Johnson (reproduced in new DNB); and a twelve page preface in Latin by the editor, addressed to the reader. He outlines the history of the work and its author, its first publication and then revision by 'Dom. Guilielmum Dugdale, magnæ Doctrinæ & Integratatis Virum'; and he also lists other works by Spelman, and his son John, editor of the life of King Alfred published posthumously in 1678. This preface is signed 'J.A.', which I had initially thought might be John Aubrey: however, Dr William Poole has kindly pointed out to me that it is in fact the lawyer Sir James Astrey (d. 1709), formerly of Brasenose, Oxford. In his Fasti, Anthony Wood (whom the editor says is his particular friend) notes that Astrey 'augmented and corrected the third edition . and before it hath put a large account of the life, manners and writing of the said Sir Henry' (Fasti, ed. Bliss, II 361). Provenance. Small stamp on title 'Bibliot. Bonclerici': this is Monsignor Antonio Bonclerici di Cagli, Italian antiquary of the late 18th century; then bookplate of the Rev. John L. Moilliet of Abberley Rectory (Worcs), dated 1865; more recently in Dorset County Library, with bookplate, and their small library stamp on the title verso. Wing S4926; Lowndes p. 2474 ('the best edition'). Seller Inventory # 19721

About this Item: Tho. Braddyll [et al.], London, 1687. Folio, pp. [22], 576; engraved portrait of the author, title printed in red and black, text in double column, full contemporary calf, gilt-decorated spine in 7 compartments, red morocco label in 1; extremities rubbed, but generally a very good copy of the best edition, which includes a life of the author. The work evolved from Spelman's earlier studies on the basis of English law, but "at the outset of his researches he experienced so much difficulty in assigning the proper meanings to Anglo-Saxon and Latin terms, that he determined to postpone his legal researches" (DNB) in favor of the philological question. The work subsequently proved useful to students of Shakespeare and the Elizabethans. Portions of the work were first published in 1626, and the full text, posthumously, in 1664. Wing S4926.
