Februar 1945 in New York, verbrachte seine Jugend in Kalifornien (davon ein Jahr von 1958 bis 1959 in Genf). Bis 1965 studierte er Mathematik an der Universität von Stanford, danach bis 1972 an der Universität von Oregon in Eugene, wo er 1975 in Physik promovierte. Von 1974 bis 1975 war er Wissenschaftlicher Assistent im Fachbereich Physik der Universität Regensburg und entdeckte dort den sogenannten "Schmetterling von Hofstadter". Douglas Hofstadter hat seit 1988 einen Lehrstuhl für Kognitionswissenschaft an der Indiana University in Bloomington inne und leitet dort das Center for Research on Concepts and Cognition. Von 1984 - 1988 war er Walgreen Professor for the Study of Human Understanding an der Universität von Michigan in Ann Arbor. Gastprofessuren an der Universität Bologna, dem MIT, und dem Collège de France. Neben seinen wissenschaftlichen Studien interessiert sich Douglas Hofstadter leidenschaftlich für Sprachen und beherrscht unter anderem Französisch, Italienisch, Deutsch, Spanisch, Russisch und Chinesisch.
