Interior Nice tight Clean Light Wear Fox, , Crabtree arrived in the California gold fields at age 5 and began dancing in the mining camps at age 8. She and her family moved to San Francisco when she was 9 and Lotta continued to attract much attention on the stage for a number of years. Several years later she came east and was a sensation in the Broadway music halls. As can be imagined, the beautiful performer was ardently persued but never married; her mother, and later she herself, invested in California real estate. She retired to New Jersey, a wealthy woman, at age 45., Lotta, who became the most popular soubrette of the seventies and eighties, began her career in the gold camps of the High Sierras, and the gambling saloons and variety halls of San Francisco. Troupes appeared not only in the theatres of the cities, but took to the road by stage coach or even on foot and played in the remotest mining towns with showers of gold as their reward. This is the story of the fascinating Lotta who emerged out of this background to become throughout the country the foremost comedy actress and the pioneer in extravaganza and burlesque. Includes much about other entertainers of the time, including Ada Menken, Lola Montez, the Booths, Julia Dean, and more. Wheat's California Gold Rush. Signed by Author(s).

Hardcover. 1st Edition. 194p. WITH SLIPCASE FROM BAYNTUN BINDERY. A small hardcover book bound in gilt-decorated green cloth. All foredges gilt. Good condition overall. The hinges were starting to crack, but have been repaired. The spine remains a bit cockeyed and faded, and there are faint speckly stains on the front board. Previous owner's neat bookplate inside the front cover. The illustration on page 1 has faded onto the facing page, which is the list of illustrations. Scant foxing on the edges; otherwise, text unmarked and binding secure enough for reading purposes. Comes in a custom wrapper made of green cloth-covered boards and a half-morocco slipcase designed by the Bayntun bindery. The leather is lightly rubbed and has a dark spot near the top, but is otherwise smooth and tastefully decorated with gilt accents and five raised bands. Illustrated with four black and white plates and several vignettes by George Cruikshank. The book itself measures approx. 6.7" x 4.5". See Cohn 548.
