About this Item: Milwaukee, WI Privately printed [Wisconsin Cuneo Press] 1939, 1939. Soft cover. Condition: Fine. 4to. (31 cm.) 132p. Profusely illustrated with black and white photos of officers of all organizations, including the auxiliary, postal officials, hundreds of letter carriers and auxiliary members, and members of congress from Wisconsin at the time. Running headpiece and bottom piece of gilt. Stiff wrappers heavily decorated in gilt with a blue split-image vignette of letter carriers from 1889 and 1939. Bound with plastic spiral. Founded in 1889, the National Association of Letter Carriers (NALC) is a union of letter carriers employed by the U.S. Postal Service. Knowing that the Grand Army of the Republic, which included many letter carriers, was meeting in Milwaukee in 1889, the Milwaukee Letter Carriers issued a call for a reunion to organize themselves into a national association. 60 letter carriers from 18 states attended this reunion and on August 29, 1889, adopted a resolution to form the National Association of Letter Carriers, which had four objectives: fraternity, fidelity, benevolence, and unity.
